Extent of U.S. Aid to Arab States

Here are the figures on how much military aid money
in grants and credits the saber-rattling Arab states (shaded
greet and Israel have received from the U.S. in late years.

The Arabs have received Soviet military aid, too, especially
the United Arab Republic (Egypt) and Syria, but how much
is undisclosed.

Relative )Military Strength Contrasts Israel and Arabs

By CARL ALPERT
HAIFA --- Who is stronger, the
Israeli , or the Arabs?
This is the question which has
been asked repeatedly in recent
weeks. We in Israel must take a
realistic view of things as they
actually are This has not been
a time for wishful thinking. What
is the relative strength of the two
sides. measured objectively?
The precise armed strength of
a country is a preciously guarded
military secret. Yet it is timely
to recall an authoritative appraisal
of the armed might in the Middle
East as published in the New York
Times as recently as last Decem- •
her by Hanson W. Baldwin, the
paper's military affairs expert.
Baldwin cited figures, and his
report was quoted freely in the
Israel press at the time without
comment.
According to Baldwin. Israel has
a permanent armed force of be-
tween 60.000 and 72.000 men. The

reserves can provide some guar-
ter of a million more men and
women, all of whom have had
military training and know their
places in the organization. Those ,
of us who were here during the
Sinai campaign can also recall the
extent to which drafting of buses.
trucks, and p r i v at e cars can
quickly. efficiently make this army
and its equipment mobile.

Israel is credited with 600 to
800 tanks and about 450 planes.
Among the latter are about 75
French Mirages. These were the
planes which shot down the six
Syrian Migs not long ago. The
navy is small. It includes two
desroyers (one of which was
captured from the Egyptians in
1956), four submarines, and
lots of speedy coastal patrol
vessels.
The regular armed forces in
Egypt consist of between 180,000
and 200,000 men, of whom about
50,000 are tied down in Yemen.
