'What Freud Really Said'—His Views and Personality Summarized case histories, ex- pert analyses of Freudian views and reflections on many Freudian attitudes as well as references to his personal life are to be found in "What Freud Really Said" by David Stafford-Clark. published by Schocken Books. The author, a noted London psychologist. offers here a critique of psychological methods and doc- trines. He covers a variety of leading psychological subjects — interpretation of dreams, studies of hysteria, sexuality, theories of neuroses and numerous other re- lated issues. . In the course of his analytical approaches, the author also out- lines the profession of psycho- analysis and there are some inter- esting comments on Sigmund Freud's Jewish attitudes and on his family relationships, "Until some time after his father's death," Stafford-Clark writes, "Freud considered him- self subject to symptoms of neu- rosis. His feelings for his father and mother were as profound and complicated as his own theories would suggest; his father was an orthodox Jew and, throughout his father's life as well as his own, he had seen the vicious power of racial intol- erance—in this case anti-Semit- ism—to humiliate, insult and embitter social and professional relationships." The book commences with pre- ludes, one quoting Freud who in 1928 said: "Why was it that none of the pious ever discovered Psych- analysis? Why did it have to wait for a completely Godless Jew?" The book concludes with a com- ment that seeks to clarify this statement, the author asserting: "Freud himself was a sincere and generous man, as well as a Hasidic Tales Once a poor Hasid (disciple) be- came so distraught because of the crowding in his hovel that he ap- pealed to his Zaddik for advice. "Rebbe, - (common term applied to a Zaddik, to distinguish him from an ordinary rabbi) he cried, "we have so many children (may no Evil Eye fall on them!) and so many relatives living with us, that my wife and I cannot turn around in the house!" "Have you also a goat?" asked the sitter Yid. "Why not?" answered the other. "What Jew doesn't own a goat?" "Then my counsel is that you bring the animal into your dwel- IMg." This greatly mystified the Hasid, but he did not dare argue. The next day, however, having done as he Everybody loves the "SHAGGY-LOOK"... c. "My counsel is that you bring them likewise into your house." Again the Hasid could not bring himself to argue, but after a day with the chickens underfoot and on every rafter, he returned once more to the Zaddik, this time half- crazed. "So it is bad, eh my son?" the other said calmly. "It is the end of the world!" re- plied the lia.sid. "Very well. then. Now go home, turn out the goat and the chickens, and come back to me on the mor- row." The following day the Hasid showed up with his face beaming. "Rebbe!" he cried. "a thousand blessings on thee!
