The historic fact to be remem- bered is that Israel will not yield to threats that might lead to des- truction, and extinction is not in Israel's or Jewry's vocabulary. It is accepted as certainty that Israel will never sacrifice the right of ships on the way to Eilat Port to cross the Tiran Strait, through Sharm el-Sheikh. Eng- land, now 37, married and the mother of two daughters, has drawn wide attention with her novel, "There Goes Davey Cohen," published by Coward-McCann (200 Madison, NY 16). The title is unimportant. To Rosie, the heroine who possesses very little of heroism, many people whom she met or saw at a dis- tance resembled actors or public figures, or people of her acquaint- ance. The importance about this novel is that it portrays the life of a Jewish couple. Rosie and David are a couple that appears to be battling. Actually, it is Ben who is always needling his wife. And Rosie is the yielding type. What Ben says goes although Ben was her inferior when they married. The entire novel is about their vacation in Spain — the constant drinking of vino, Rosie's getting sick occasionally, their separating for the day so Ben could go with friends he had met while Rosie went to the beach or shopped a bit. Ben was not niggardly alto- gether: occasionally he gave her some pesos. And he constantly dominated over her. It is when they are with an un- couth coulle, when Rosie hears an anti-Semitic remark, that she shows resentment. Afterward, when Ben returns to their cheap hotel room with his hands full of gifts — and finds her sick — or was she dying — he breaks down. There was love after all. There was no doubt about her love, and at the end Ben's asserts itself. "There Goes Davey Cohen" ex- cellently portrays life in Spain by vacationists and a husband-wife relationship. It is a well written story. "Doctor, why is it I only feel good when I DON'T feel good?"
