Elmer Rice, 74
Playwright

LONDON — Elmer Rice, the
noted American playwright and
novelist, died in a Southampton
hospital Monday of pneumonia at
age 74. He was
taken off the
liner France last
week after suf-
fering a heart
attack and ad-
mitted to the
Southampton
Hospital. Pneu- Rice

Known as one of the formative
figures in the modern American
theater, Mr. Rice won a 1929
Pulitzer Prize for his play, "Street
Scene."
Born in New York City, the son
of Jacob and Fanny Reizenstein,
he left high school after his sopho-
more year and held jobs as a
claims clerk in a commercial house
and later as a law clerk. He later
attended law school and was ad-
mitted to the bar but quit that
profession to take up writing. He
changed his name after writing his
first play.
A prolific writer, Mr. Rice
•turned out 50 full-length plays,
foilr novels, a book about the
theater and many one-act plays,
short stories, articles, screenplays,
television scripts as well as an
autobiography, "Minority Report."

Nazi Death Camp Doctor
Dies; Escaped Trial

BONN (JTA)—Dr. Hans Eisele,
a doctor at the Buchenwald death
camp, died recently in Cairo at the
age of 55. Eisele fled from a war
crimes trial to Egypt in 1952 and
remained there after President
Nasser rejected a West German
request for his extradition.
Eisele was twice sentenced to
death by the allies for his death
camp activities but was released
in 1952. He was then arrested for
trial by a German court, but fled
Germany, turning up in Cairo.

Rose F. Hollander, a member of
several Jewish women's organiza-
tions, among them Temple Beth
El Sisterhood, of which she was
board member and financial sec-
retary, died Monday at age 77.
Mrs. Hollander, a native of
Cleveland, lived in the Detroit area
42 years. She belonged to Beth
El, Brandeis University National
Women's Committee. Sinai Hospital
Women's Guild, Hadassah, National
Council of Jewish Women, Ameri-
can Red Cross and the Women's
Auxiliary of the Jewish Home for
Aged.
Survivors are her husban d.

Albert Goldman,
NY Postmaster

NEW YORK — Albert Goldman.
retired postmaster of New York,
died last Friday at age 84.
Mr. Goldman, who had been
commissioner of the city's depart-
ment of plant and structures (now
the department of public works)
before his postmastership, had
been in public office 25 years.
During World War II Mr. Gold-
man supervised 4,000 Army and
Navy postal units at home and
abroad, the largest wartime mail
volume handled anywhere. This
job brought him the Medal of
Merit.
He was a founder of the Albert
Einstein College of Medicine at
Yeshiva University and had been
active in more than 50 civic, busi-
ness and charity organizations.

Labor Zionist

Fannie Rosenberg, widow of
Louis Rosenberg, with whom she
was active in the Labor Zionist
movement, died Monday at age 74.
Mrs. Rosenberg, 18082 Mark
Twain. was born in Poland and
lived in Detroit 39 years. She was
a member of the Chaim Weizmann
Society, Gold Star Parents, Poale
Zion and Farband. Mr. Rosenberg,
who died in 1965, was chairman of
Farband and secretary-treasurer
of Poale Zion.
Surviving her are a daughter,
Mrs. Helen Ritter; a brother,
Joshua Joyrich; and a sister, Mrs.
Esther Zyskind.

Mr. Goldsmith was a retired

had been an active labor leader
for many years. He was among
