NEW YORK—Three Jews, arrested by Soviet police in Riga
last summer while they attended a concert there by Israeli folksinger
Geula Gil, have been sentenced to two years' imprisonment by a Riga
court on charges of attempting to use force to obstruct police at
the concert.
The sentences were disclosed here after an unidentified spectator
at the public trial in the Peoples Court of the Kirov district of Riga
made public his notes of the proceedings.
The spectator said that one of the defendants, Maksim Kushlin,
had pleaded guilty to part of the charges—obstructing the police—
but not to "hooliganism." The two other defendants, Avigail Roth
, and Mark Blum, were said to have denied the charges against them.
