But the 26 nurses and 10 male members of the Hadassah Hospital staff, including two doctors and a pharmacist from Detroit, all agreed that participation in the Four Day March to Jerusalem was an ex- hilarating experience. In ancient days, a custom de- veloped of going up to Jerusalem, the holy city, for the spring and autumn festivals. This has been revived in modern Israel in the form of the four-day march before Passover each year. This year the march attracted more than 12,000 participants, including many from foreign lands. The oldest participant was Yosef Doren, 100, who has joined in the march for the past eight years. He lives in the Tel Aviv Old Age Home. Eddy Superstine, formerly of Wayne State University's college of pharmacy, and now head of Hadassah's pharmacy services, is a veteran participant in the march, with four medals to his credit. Superstine explained how he felt on the last lap of the march: "You regain your strength, forget about those blisters, and look about you at the cedars, the pines, the glorious living colors of the spring flowers and the subtle different shades of green. It is an unforget- table experience to walk literally in the footsteps of the Prophets, in the Land of the Bible. And with you walk thousands of others, singing and clapping their hands in time to their songs. There is a wonderful spirit of camaraderie. "At last you see Jerusalem glow- ing on its height, looking much as it must have looked in the days when Solomon built the temple It is so inspiring that the blisters don't matter." Jewish Groups Seek State Aid for Day Schools in Montreal MONTREAL (JTA) — Requests that the government of Quebec sup- port Jewish day schools in Montreal from tax funds have been made here by the Canadian Jewish Con- gress and the Council of Jewish Educational Institutions of Greater Montreal. A delegation representing the two organizations voiced those re- quests at a conference at Quebec City with the province minister of education, Jean Jacques Bertrand. The delegation told the education minister that the Jewish day schools were not to be considered as "pri- vate schools in the common sense of the term." The Jewish day schools, it was pointed out, were not created in opposition to the general school system, but rather to maintain that system in full with the added program of courses in Jewish religion, culture and lan- guages. At present, government grants are available only to independent secondary schools. Five Jewish high schools here are so recognized. The delegation maintained that the per capita cost of education of a child from kindergarten to Grade 11 ought to be paid from tax revenues to the officially recognized Jew- ish day schools for every child en- rolled in any of the specified Israel Independence Day Event to Mark 19th Year of Statehood Rabbi Leon Fram will deliver the keynote address at the city- wide anniversary celebration of Is- rael's independence 7:30 p.m. May 14 at Temple Israel. The announcement stated that the commission adopted a resolu- tion at its last meeting to take such a step in order to recognize the "rights of certain children who cannot find in existing schools an answer to their aspir- ations." The commission decided to give "top priority" to the es- t a bl is hment of nonsectarian schools and classes which "would surely be ready for next Septem- ber according to demand and need."
