Passover Seder at Borman Hall By SAM RUBIN This was my first seder at a home for the aged. It really would take a good writer to describe a seder such as this, but I will try my best to draw a picture of this most impressive one I had ever witnessed. First, the bright lights, silver candlesticks at the head table, beautiful live flowers all around with their aroma of roses, carried me away from being a resident in a "Masev Zkanim." I had the feeling of being at a beautiful hotel, attending a ban- quet. I looked at the smiling, happy faces of people dressed in their best fineries and I had a sense of contentment. I saw a nun sitting at the head Now . . . The food and wine at both seders were delicious thanks to Mrs. Sonnenblick and our fine housekeeper, Mrs. Weiner and all of the help. After it was all over, I went up- stairs to my room, and I felt a desire to take my mandolin and play "After the Ball Was Over," but I was too sleepy, so instead, I said a prayer wishing that we would all be together again next year to enjoy these wonderful seders at Borman Hall. Coming out from the dining room, after the seder, a man asked, "Why didn't they have a becber of wine for Elijah, like they do in every Jewish home?" I said, "Because in every Jewish home, the door is open for him but we had all the doors closed and a policeman in front. lie walked away because he didn't want to be arrested for trespassing." I said, "Ah, that is from the wine I drank." She smiled as we said our goodbys. I dearly wish every parent might read this powerful page with due under- standing for the depth of insight expressed in it. Let me quote one paragraph which sums up accur- ately the truth that everyone's appreciation for justice must be nothing but a pure culture of his own subjectivity. "As a child I reproached my- self, in accord with you, for not going to the synagogue often enough, for not fasting, and so on. I thought that in this way I was doing a wrong not to myself but to you, and I was penetrated by a sense of guilt . . ." As I seem to grow in life ap- preciation I frequently remind my- self of Emerson's observation: "I shudder when I realize that God is a just God." With my very best regards, JOHN M.
