He makes them incapable of mean • ideals and easy self-satisfaction." Morris Adler was a man who fitted this definition. Ile was a great human being, an outstanding rabbi, a fervent Jew. Ile was the spiritual leader of one of the lead- ing congregations in the United States. His several books werq widely read. Living in the great induArial center of Detroit, he won for himself an important place in the labor move.nent. Morris Adler was both lover and master of words, using the essay form with artistry and restraint. Through these writings we get an idea of the kind of person he was —the breadth of his interests, the humaneness of his outlook, his pas- sionate attachment to Judaism and social justice . . . We shall miss Rabbi Adler's strong and wise voice. But our fortune is great that that voice, filled as it was with concern for humanity and mentshlichkeit rings out so loudly and clearly in "May I Have A Word With You?" These are now available in a full- length book , "The Letters of Pfc. Richard E. Marks, USMC," pub- lished by Lippincott. While these letters represent a two-year diary, a blow-by-blow ac- count of his activities, expressions of many views on many subjects, evaluations of the young fellows in service who had aims which Richard viewed critically or diag- nosed with skill, they emerge in their totality as philosophical es- says which, -fortunately, have been preserved. Many of his letters are deeply moving. There are affectionate references to mother and sister, recollections of his father who died in 1963. There are comments on the Viet- nam situation. From the field he wrote: "I am fighting to protect and maintain what I believe in and what I want to live in — a democratic society. If I am killed while carrying out this mission I want no one to cry or mourn for me, I want people to hold their heads high and be proud of me for the job I did." Ironically, his last letter became a will and testament. In it he wrote he wanted his sister to be the beneficiary of his life insurance, he commented on possible mar- riage for his sister, remarriage for his mother. He specified the rabbi who was to officiate at his HOUSE TOO BIG? HOUSE TOO SMALL? C-A-S-H . A Bank Leumi spokesman said that the Bank Leumi had assured the funds of the Credit Bank, one of Israel's smaller banking insti- tutions. There was no report on the nature of the Credit Bank's troubles, Last January, the Bank of Israel took over two other banks, Feuchtwanger and Ellerns, after government investigators found alleged mismanagement. Dr. Y. Foeder, chairman of the Bank Leumi, declared Mon- day night that Israel's banking system was basically sound de- spite the takeovers of the three banks. Commenting on the problems of the Feuchtwanger, Ellern and Is- rael Credit banks, he emphasized that all obligations of the three banks to depositors would be paid in full, He also disclosed that the Bank Leumi would pay 5,000,000 pounds ($1,600,000) for Ellerns and the Credit Bank which have a total of 25 branches in Israel. He said eight of the branches would be operated as Leumi units and the others sold to other Israeli banks seeking new outlets. Yankee High Scorer Aids Israel Team The basketball team of Maccabi Tel-Aviv reached the finals of the European Cup because of a Jewish boy from Trenton, N.J., Cal Brodie. Brodie, who played for the U.S. team in Israel at the last Mac- cabia in 1965, liked Israel and promised to return, This he did last summer, and now nearly won the cup for Israel. A byplay to the cup was as follows: Maccabi Tel-Aviv had to play Ignes-Varese and suddenly Brodie discovered that his shoes were torn. In Israel he could not find a suitable pair to fit him and he had to request the help of El Al to get him a pair from New York, Within 48 hours these shoes arrived in Tel Aviv for him and he went on to score more than 30 points by himself for his team.
