Childhood of Israel's President--Shazar's `Morning Stars'
Israel's President Zalman
Shazar is a man of great learning.
He is known as an orator, and
he possesses a distinct and very
impressive literary style which
distinguished him when he was
the editor of the Labor Zionist
periodicals before the emergency
of the State of Israel.
Shazar reminisced about his
childhood in a Hebrew book,
"Kokhvei Boker," which was pub-
lished in Tel Aviv. It has been
translated into English under the
his interest in Zionism which
"used to slip into the synagogue

his memories to the synagogue in

TEL AVIV (ZINS)—Prof. Amos
de Shalit of Weizmann Institute
told the Commercial and Industrial
Club here that "there is no reason
for Israel's scientists to emigrate
in order to find work, for it is pos-
sible to encourage more interna-
tional financing for scientific re-
searchers here."
Prof. Shalit further said that
Israel now receives $8,200,000 from
the United States for basic re-
search projects, which is 10 per
cent of the funds being spent by
the U.S. for research abroad. Israel
ranks third after Britain and Aus-
tralia as a beneficiary of U.S. funds
for researching.
"Israel also receives $250,000
from France as well as funds from
West Germany," he reported.
At the same time Prof. Shalit
termed the present scientific train-
ing methods in Israeli schools as
"outdated." He urged a revision of
these methods by making all stu-
dents aware of the present scien-
tific revolution affecting especially
such areas as nutrition and com-
munication. He also felt that stu-
dents should be introduced to basic
scientific concepts. He said it was
useless for teachers simply to relay
facts.
