Yekuni Purkan

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright, 1967, JTA. lee.)

The "Yekum Purkan" prayer is
recited in the synagogue on Satur-
day morning after the reading of
the Tora.
Many claim that this was insti-
tuted in the days of the Babylo-
nian exile. It is a prayer which
blesses the scholars, teachers, Rab-
bis and students who study the
Tora. A second such prayer blesses
the laiety who support these schol-
ars and the institutions of Jewish
life. Eventually the blessing ap-
plies to the entire congregation,
both scholar and laymen. It is felt
by some that the original prayer
was introduced in the Babylonian
exile because of the official in-
terpreter who would both translate
and comment upon the reading of
the Tora from Hebrew into Aramic.
Whatever a Jew enjoys in life, he
must offer thanks and blessing
for it, be it a tangible or intangible
asset that he enjoys. Thus, when
coming before the Tora, each one
who is called pronounces a bene-
diction before and after the read-
ing of his portion, thanking the
Almighty for this precious gift of
the Tora. Also. after the reading,
the congregation feels impressed
to thank the interpreter or in-
terpreters who explain the reading
of the Torii These are, of course,
the Rabbis from the earliest_ of
times who took pains to comment
and make clear each word of the
Tora. It then came to one's mind
that the Rabbis would not have
been able to succeed without the
laiety who support the Tora and
T(,ra institutions and thus they too
were blessed in a mood of thanks-
gi% ing.
