Hagada Research Makes Historic Find
Two decorative borders used in
both Czech and Hebrew books of
the 1520s and 1530s prove there
were definite cooperative relations
between Prague's first Jewish
printers and a leading Bohemian
printer there. This is the first dis-
covery of such cooperation in early
Jewish printing in Central Europe,
which began in Prague around
1512.
The discovery was made in re-
search on the earliest illustrated
Passover Hagada that exists in
print, which appeared in Prague,
in 1526. An esthetic masterpiece,
the Hagada was recently issued in
facsimile by Shulsinger Brothers,
New York publishers of Jewish
classics. To make the facsimile
edition complete, Shulsinger as-
signed Rabbi Charles Wengrov to
write an accompanying book on
every aspect of the Prague Ha-
gada. The shared borders found
by the author are shown in his
book, "Hagada and Woodcut," just
off the press.
Few instances are known in
general of a page border being
shaded by two or more early
printers.
The research on the Prague Ha-
gada, born of Shulsinger Brothers'
desire for a thorough study, was
done mainly at the Jewish Theo-
logical Seminary Library and New
York Public Library.
The marginal note has made
the Prague Hagada famous while
explaining why bitter herbs are
eaten, on Passover eve, the man
of the house points to his wife by
custom, because "an evil woman is
more bitter than death."
As a result, the volume has al-
ways been known as the "woman-
hating Hagada," and its printer
was suspected of getting back in
this way at a shrewish wife.,
