Oceanographer Puts
Pharaoh's Hot Chase
Into New Perspective

an forces.

The oceanographer said the
water in the newly discovered
"deep" registers 90 degrees
compared with 70 degrees Fah-
renheit for normal Red Sea bot-
tom water. The other nearby
holes register about 101 and 133
degress, respectively.
The bottom of the 200-foot deep
hole just found is some 6,200 feet
beneath the sea surface.
The Bible relates, in its account
of the Exodus, how the Israelites,
pursued by Pharaoh's army, safely
crossed the Red Sea after "Moses
stretched out his hand over the
sea; and the Lord . . . made the
sea dry land, and the waters were
divided."
Then the Egyptians followed in
hot pursuit but were engulfed in
swirling and raging waters.
A spokesman for the National
Geographic Society stated -that
while "no one knows for sure"
where the Israelites crossed and
the Egpytians subsequently drown-
ed, all scholarly theories suggest
that such events took place many
miles north of the newly discover-
ed hot holes in the Red Sea.

Bnai Brith, Italian ADLs
Have Dispute Over Name

NEW YORK (JTA)—The Anti-
Dafamation League of Bnai Brith,
founded in 1913, and the Ameri-
can Italian Anti-Defamation Lea-
gue, established a year ago, are at
odds over the use of the term
"anti-defamation" in the names of
their respective organizations, it
was revealed here last weekend.
According to Civil Court Judge
Ross J. Di Lorenzo, president of
the Italian-American group, his
organization, like the older ADL,
would fight against anti-Semitism.
He said his organization has re-
jected overwhelmingly a proposal
by the Bnai Brith ADL that it
change its title to the "American
Italian League for Human Rights."
He charged that many writers for
the mass media, which use terms
to which Italians object, are "of
Jewish extraction."

WASHINGTON—The discovery
of a "hot hole" in the Red Sea in-
dicates that Pharaoh's Egyptian
soldiers could literally have been
in "hot water" pursuing the flee-
ing Israelites at the time of the
Exodus, Dr. David A. Ross of the
Woods Hole, Mass., oceanographic
institution, reported Wednesday to
the American Geophysical Union.
Dr. Ross defined a "hot hole" as
deep and filled with hot, very
salty water, extending down to the
cooler sea bottom. Dr. Ross said
the new discovery brings to three
the number of such holes found
in the area of the Red Sea. They
are roughly opposite Mecca on the
Arabian side and many miles south
of where the sea is believed to
have swallowed the pursuing Egyp-
