THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 44—Friday, April 21, 1967 Choosing a Hebrew Name By RIVA FRANK How would you like to have a name that means "one which brightens?" Well, if your first name is Mayer or Meyer, that's what it does. And how would you like to have a name that means, "a delight?" Well, if your first name is Adina. that's what it means. 'Both are, of course, Hebrew names and in this modern age, it still is certainly not difficult to choose a Hebrew name which will be significant to the child and important for the family, too. After all, a first name is carried throughout life. As one writer- philosopher once said, "one should be named after somebody or something, else a name is really only an empty breath." How does one choose a name? By and large, it is to honor an- other person, a grandparent, rela- tive or friend who has passed away. The Hebrew law is that we should not name a child after a living person. On the other hand, Sephardic Jews may name a child after a grandfather, for example, even if the grandfather is living, we are told. In Israel, a common practice is to give a child as his first name —the name of a tree, or fruit or animal. And these Hebrew names sound good, too. For instance, we have: Tamar—a date (a girl's name) o n a —a pomegranate (a girl's name) K Ilan—a tree (a bin's name) Ayala—a lion (a boy's name) Shoshana—a rose (a girl', name) Cannella—Mt. Carmel (a girl's name) Margolit—a pearl (a girl', name) Bad:is...a/1—a myrtle (a girl's name) •i , la-a deer (a girl's name) With the establishment of the State of Israel. many Americans have followed the Israeli practice and given their children Hebrew names which are common in Is- rael. Here are a few of these:— Zahava. gold; Yaffa, pretty; Tzi- porah, a bird: Lavana, moon; Rina and Gila. joy; and Dafna, a laurel. David in Hebrew means beloved. He was the mighty warrior and poet. Deborah, which in Hebrew means a bee, was also a mighty warrior of Israel. Isaac, Abraham's son, in Hebrew means laughter; Moses, drawn from the river. Many Israelis name their chil- dren after one of the 12 tribes of Israel: Dan, Benjamin, Reuben, Gad, Simeon, Menashe, Judah, Zebulun, Naphtali, Asher, Issachar and Ephraim. We did some research and came up with some common, some un- common Hebrew and Yiddish names: Ben Zion—Son of Zion Benjamin—a son of the right hand Nathan—Ile gave Levi—joined Leban—white Ziona—daughter of Zion Ezra—a helper Boaz—strength and swiftness Ethan—strength and power Alma—maiden. fair Ann—gracious, merciful Bathsheba—daughter of an oath DeLilah—delicate, poor Dina—she who is judged Eva—a mother of life Ilephzibah—my delight Nlindel—comforter (Yiddish) Salome—peaceful Judith—she who praises, same for Judy Ruth—a friend, beloved Jesse—wealthy gift Joseph—he will add Simeon—hear Chayim—life Ephraim—fruitful, same for Efraim Abba and Abraham—father Ittamar—island of palm Rica—maiden Jethro—riches Menachem—comforts Nanhtali—struggled Kalman—merciful Aviva—spring Davida—love Hanna—grace Tova—goodly Mazel—lurk Naomi—sweet People Make News PAUL S.
