Gordis Urges Rabbis to Study and Teach `in Traditional Role' (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) NEW YORK — The American Jewish community was urged here Tuesday to re-establish the "tradi- tional role" of the rabbi as "the interpreter of Judaism to the new and the sympathetic guide of the Jew to the inner resources of Judaism." Addressing the 85th anniversary observance of the New York Board of Rabbis, Rabbi Robert Gordis, professor of Bible at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, said that "Our people are readier than we sometimes think to recog- nize the function of the rabbi as a student, a scholar and a teacher. If we recapture this traditional role, we shall have no occasion to be troubled by the negative image of the rabbi." Temple Emanu-El to Hold a 'Jewish Music Sabbath' "Jewish Music Sabbath" will be the theme of the Sabbath Eve services 8:15 p.m, today at Temple Ernanu-El. Leo Oliva, long associated with choir activities in the area, will be guest soloist with the senior choir. "A Sermon in Song" will be presented in place of the regular sermon.
