Mrs. Comay Writes Impressive Biography
for Youth, 'Ben-Gurion and Birth of Israel'

Two distinguished names are
linked in an excellent biographical
work for young readers.
David Ben-Gurion, the architect
of the State of Israel, is the subject
of "Ben-Gurion and the Birth of
Israel," and its author, - Joan
Comay, is one of Israel's most dis-
tinguished women.
Mrs. .Michael (Joan) Comay,
who is an architect by vocation,
has written several other good
books and a number of fine essays
and stories about Israel. She is
the author of "Everyone's Guide
to Israel," "The UN in Action,"
"Introducing Israel," and with
Moshe Perlman "Israel." She
served for many years as Israel
Bureau Chief for the American
periodical - Israel Speaks." She
has written scripts for documen-
tary films.
Mrs. Comay is
well known as a
lecturer through-
out t h e United
States, where
she has carried
out several coast-
to-coast speaking
tours for the Is-
rael Bonds, Ha-
dassah and other
organizations;
and also in Can-
ada, where she

Ambassador and Mrs. Comay

"The revived statehood of the
Jewish people has been the work
of many hands. But one leader
stands out among them all. The
story of David Ben-Gurion is the
story of Israel."
There will be general agree-
ment that this conclusion truthfully
sums up the Ben-Gurion story.

More Fine Children's
Books From Random

Random House has issued an-
other splendid Landmark Book—
"Combat Nurses of World War II"
by Wyatt Blassingame.
This is an illuminating book on
the role of nurses, on their con-
tributions to the humane aspects
of saving lives and the part the
nurses played in the military op-
erations of a serious conflict.
The author makes reference to
a book that was written by a
world famous photographer, Mar-
garet Bourke-White, who, having
visited the Italian front, wrote:
"The nurses had learned how to
build small dams and mudbanks
and to keep their tents from flood-
ing in the rain."
The Blassingame volume de-
scribes how nurses learned many
other ways of protecting them-
selves and the lives of those they
were serving. This is a splendid
book for boys as well as girls.
Young readers will be immensely
interested also in another Random
volume. "The Mighty Bears" by
Robert M. McClung is a wonderful
description of Alaskan and other
members of the bear family.
Lovers of animal stories will be
quite thrilled by this descriptive
book which, in story and pictures,
tells a graphic tale about the bear
family.

in a brief summary:

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Friday, April 21, 1967 - 25

In the course of the search for
whearabouts, Magnus, together
with Pater, and his dog, Jack, met
up with real danger. They dis-
covered that they were among
smugglers. They could have had
real trouble, but as they entered
the building of the smugglers'
hideout Magnus managed to take
the key to one of the rooms to
protect themselves. They managed
to do- some climbing and soon they
heard the voices of a searching
party. The smugglers were appre-
hended and the night of tension
ended in leading criminals to jus-
tice.
The dog's role, the heroism of
the boys, the dramatic setting —
all make for a fine story.

Well-Woven Plot

Trudie's love for a cow, the
cow's ailments, the search for a
cure — humor related to the story
and the pathos involved in the
little girl's desire to keep the cow
when the family was about to give
it up because of its having broken
out with spots that caused her to
jump around — these are packed
into a delightful young readers'
tale.
"Trudie and the Milch Cow" is
a story very well told by the
author, Judith Hemschemeyer, and
beautifully illustrated by Nancy
Grossman.
The Random House children's
book will prove a real delight for
youth who will find in the plot
an interesting family story as well
as an animal tale. It's a narrative
with a well-woven plot, narrated to
hold the reader's attention and to
inspire an interest in farm life.
