YIVO Establishes Fund for Graduate Center ' NEW YORK — A special fund for research and development was proclaimed Sunday by the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in honor of the 80th birthday of its chairman, Julius Borenstein. Tha announcement was made by Dr. Max Weinreich, vice chairman, at the institute's annual dinner at which tribute was paid to Boren- stein. The principal purpose of the fund will be the establishment of the VIVO Center for Graduate Studies in the Humanities and So- cial Sciences. The center will have two main divisions: a research academy to enable mature scholars to engage in coordinated or joint research; and a graduate school of Jewish studies for the training of younger scholars. The preliminary amount of the fund is $250,000. The four-day annual conference of the YIVO Institute opened at Hunter College Assembly with a tribute to the late Justice Brandeis on the occasion of the 25th anni- versary of his death. Dr. Alexander M. Bickel, profes- sor of law and legal history at Yale University. addressed the audience on the role which Justice Brandeis played in American con- st itut ional jurisprudence, and stressed his interest in the eco- nomic development of Palestine ; More than 1,000 persons attended ! the opening session. German Group Holds Dialogue With Israelis JERUSALEM (JTA) — A group of West German visitors held a special discussion here with mem- bers of an Israeli group called "Dialogue," who believe in talks and cultural exchanges with pre- sent-day Germany. The delegation is headed by Ernst Bende, a member of the West German Bundestag, the lower house of Parliament. Earlier a six-man West German delegation, representing the Ger- man-Israeli Friendship League, at- tended a ceremony at the Yad Vashem. the Documentation Cen- ter for the Nazi Holocaust. During the visit, Berlin Pastor Heinrich Gruber planted a tree in the Avenue of Righteous Gentiles, a section commemorating those non-Jews who worked under threat of Nazi torture and execution to save Jews. Dr. Gruber, now 76, saved hun- dreds of Jews during the Nazi per- iod, an action for which the Nazis sent him to the Sachsenhausen and Dachau concentration camps for three years. 3 Jordanian Priests Act as Judges in Israel JERUSALEM (JTA) —Israel permitted three Greek Orthodox priests who live in the old city of Jerusalem, and who are Jor- danian citizens, to act as judges in a Supreme Religious Court for members of the Greek Orthodox religion living in Israel. The arrangement b e c a m e known when the court received an appeal by an Israeli Greek Orthodox citizen from a ruling. The Greek Orthodox court deals with matters of personal status and family property is- sues. The three Jordanians are permitted to cross into Israel for court sessions.
