In issuing its annual Passover
message to the Jewish community
of Detroit, the Vaad Harabonim
(C ouncil of Orthodox Rabbis)
vr.:ed that every Jew meticulously
observe the laws of Passover. The
statement stressed that great care
should be exercised in purchasing
all food products.
It is the sacred duty of every
Jew. before sitting down to his
seder table. to contribute to the
traditional ''tuns Chittim" cam-
paign and to see that every Jew

Hametz 'Sold'
Wilk a Leaal
Instrument

According to a legal contract
drawn up for Rabbi Jacob Kranz
of Cong. Mishkan Israel, home-
owners may delegate to him the
power of attorney to perform the
niitzva of "selling the hametz."
The precept commands that a
Jew must sell all leavened bread
remaining in his home before the
Passover holiday begins. Tradition
provides, however, that the home-
owner may hide away all hametz
and transact a symbolic "sale" of
the bread with a non-Jew. For
this, a rabbi acts as intermediary
for the members of his congrega-
tion and after the holiday, the
non-Jew "returns" the bread to
the seller.
Rabbi Kranz said the mitzva
is often neglected because it is
considered inconvenient. For this
reason, he has sought the legal
assistance of several attorneys,
who have drawn up a "Delega-
tion of Power of Attorney for
Sale of Hametz."

7. No hametz may be eaten
after 9:20 a.m. Monday, April 24.
8. Selling of hametz must take
place before 10:20 a.m., April 24.
