Dedication exercises have been set for the weekend of May 26.28. Rabbi James I. Gordon is spiritual leader of the congregation. On the occasion of his 60th birth- day and in recognition of his 28 years of service to Temple Beth El, Irving I. Katz was presented at services last Friday with a life Melaveh D'Malka By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX (Copyright, 1967, JTA, Inc.) is customary to have a meal on Saturday night and to give it the special title of "Melaveh D'Malka." The Talmud tells us (Tractate Shabbos 119) in the name of Rabbi Hanina that a person should set his table on Saturday night even if he will eat only a minimum amount of food. The reason given is that by doing this a person will usher out the Sabbath in grand style as if he were giving a ban- quet to bid farewell to the king who had just visited him. This is why the meal is called "Melaveh D'Malka" (i.e. the farewell to the king). Later commentaries con- sidered this meal as a good omen that a man's table will be well provided for during the week. Others considered this meal as an omen that the family will be spar- ed from painful cures. A group of commentaries associate this meal with the life hereafter. Some of them claim that observance of this meal will spare one from being restless in his grave. The logic be- hind this may be that since he allows the Sabbath to depart from hi. home in dignity and orderli- ness. so will his own departure from this world and the life in he hereafter be one of dignity and calm. Other mystic sources claim that this meal feeds one of the organs of the human body which is that organ from which the resur- rection of the dead will take place. They claim that when Adam tasted the forbidden fruit which brought death unto this world, one organ did not derive any benefit or nourishment from this fruit. It is this organ that never decom- poses entirely in the grave, and therefore serves as the residue of the human body out of which the It MRS. DOBRUSIN AND THE LATE MR. ZACK ris Dobrusin, Mrs. Dobrusin .has donated the scroll to the Mishkan Israel Synagogue. The dedication ceremony, at which the Tora will be consecrated in memory of Mrs. Dobrusin's late husband, parents and parents-in- law, will take place at the syna- gogue 8:45 a.m. Sunday. Rabbi Jacob N. Kranz will offi- ciate at the ceremony. Represen- tatives of the Dobrusin family will include Mrs. Dobrusin and her children, Gerald, Dale, Joseph and Linda. 80 ACRES OF FUN! This organ, is, so to speak, kept alive only by the meal which one consumes with reverence on Sat- urday night. REPAIR AND INSTALLATION This meal is associated with King David and sometimes call- ed "Seudatha D'David Malka." It is related in the Talmud that King David took special delight in his Saturday night meal (Tract tate Shabbos 30a). This is because when he asked the Almighty to tell him the day on which he was ordained to die, the Almighty only told him that it would be on the Sabbath Day (without telling him on which Sabbath it would be): Therefore, after completing an- other Sabbath and finding himself still alive, he would rejoice with a special feast, since it was clear to him that he would have at least another week of life in this earth. The observance of the Sat- urday night meal reflects this epi- sode as well as it perhaps, serves . as a means of thanking the Al- mighty that we ourselves have liv- ed to enjoy another Sabbath of; our lives.
