Sartre Sees Strong Desire
for Peace on Part of Israel

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Jean Paul
Sartre, the French existentialist
philosopher and Nobel Prize win-
ner, summed- up for the press
here his reaction to a month-long
visit to the Middle East, with the
assertion that he had found a wide
and deep Israeli desire for peace
with the Arabs.
He avoided newsmen's questions
on how that Israeli sentiment com-
pared with Egyptian opinion.
The philosopher, who met with
Premier Levi Eshkol, said no so-
lution to the Arab-Israel conflict
could be found unless "the pre-
ambles of both sides are accept-
ed." He met with a wide range
of Israeli personalities during the
past two weeks.

He added that the "pream-
bles" were Israel's demand that
the Arab states recognize Is-
rael's existence and sovereignty
and the Arab demand that all
Palestinian Arab refugees be
entitled to return to their former
homes in what is now Israel.

Refusal by both sides to accept
the preamble of the other caused
tension and fear of war, he said,
adding that while he had found
slight progress in relations be-
tween Israel and the Arab states,
he saw "as yet no favorable signs
of peace."

described as "the greatest states-

Mrs. Meir, responding to the
reassurance given by some mem-

that Israel was safe from invasion
because the Israel government had
a standing pledge that the United
States would come to Israel's de-
fense if Israel was attacked, stated
that the Israeli government was
concerned as to whether or not
there would be an Israel left to

Morse said.
The Senator spoke against mil-
itary aid given by the United
States to some of the Arab govern-
ments which he said is used to
keep juntas and cliques in power,
not for purposes of self-determina-
tion but to suppress it. "I will

military aid for constructive gov-
ernments to protect themselves
against coups from the right and

pens to military aid given to the

Pro-Arab pickets paraded out-
side the hotel with anti-Israel plac-
ards, calling Zionism a "ruthless
ideology." There were about 50 to
75 picketers.
