Wiesenthal's Memoirs: Immense Record of Nazi Crimes,
Revealing One Man's Labor Tracking Down Murderers

When the announcement was
made three weeks ago that Franz
Stangl, the Nazi arch criminal, was
arrested in Brazil, his name could
have been unknown to nearly all
who read about his murderous ex-
ploits. That is why those who were
informed, simultaneously, that Si-
mon Wiesenthal continued to
gather data about Nazi criminals
and that Stangl was among those
he exposed, acquired confirmation
that the searcher for criminals and
for evidence of their guilt remains
a leader in the effort to r-ssure
punishment for the brutalities of
the Hitler era.
Confirmation is found in the im-
portant book, "The Murderers
Among Us," published by McGraw-
Hill. This significant work con-
tains "The Weisenthal Memoirs,"
edited by Joseph Wechsberg to
-whom the eminent searcher for
truth and for criminals has related
his life story and has told about
the murderers be is seeking, some
of whom he has rounded up or
enabled others to discover.
Wiesenthal's life story is part
of this valuable work. He had
survived the Nazi holocaust —
having been found on a pile of
corpses when the Allied troops
reached the Mauthausen Concen-

tration Camp. He began life
anew, started to gather data, es-
tablished a Vienna office whence
he tracked down Nazis who were
escaping from justice.

The major expose in Wiesen-
thal's book is of "Odessa" — the
organization of SS Nazi criminals
--Organization der SS-Angeherigen
—which has been assisting Nazi
criminals to escape from Germany
and therefore to escape justice.
This revelation alone is worth

the full effort in gathering the
Wiesenthal data — and Wechsberg
has performed his task with skill.

Indeed, a lot of things make
sense in realizing the extent of
Nazi post-war activities, especially
in relation to Odessa as an esca-
pees' group, and Wiesenthal's in-
dication of the vast sums that are
used to help the criminals find
havens in Latin American coun-
tries, in Syria, Egypt, Spain, should
open up the eyes of justice-seeking
people.
Wiesenthal also shows that hid-
den assets of stolen funds are
used in the post-war era by
Nazis to facilitate their escape.
There is warning in his memoirs

emerging
minals are tracked down and
brought to justice.
Wiesenthal's memoirs are com-
plete with data about stolen pro-
perty and the Nazis' use of them,
about tactics that have shocked
the world. He reveals the fears. It
also points to some Nazi collabora-
tors who desired to show mercy.
Totally, it is an expose of the
horrors, a warning against the
plotters in this era of peace. And
it is the life story of a 'man who
has dedicated himself to impose
punishment upon criminals.
