Mandell L. Berman Named to Head
Education Association Governing Body

Mandell L. Berman of Detroit
has been designated chairman of
the national governing council of
the American Association for Jew-
ish Education, it was announced
by Isadore Breslau. AAJE presi-
dent. The officers of the' AAJE
unanimously approved the( nom-
ination of the Detroit leathir to the
post occupied by the late Samuel
II. Daroff for almost 20 years.

Berman, senior vice president of '
the Bert L. Smokier Co.. residen-
tial builders, is chairman of the
committee on Federation planning
for Jewish education of the Coun-
cil of Jewish Federations and Wel-
fare Funds. Long active in this
area of communal work. Berman
has served as chairmar of the
educational budgeting division,
and the survey committee of,

the Detroit Welfare Federation.
For several years he was president
of the United Hebrew Schools. He
is treasurer of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek.

Flint's Jewish Community Coun-
cil last week set into motion the
annual drive for the United Jew-
ish Appeal and 50 additional local,
national and overseas causes, at
functions for the overall city drive
and the women's division. Zvi Kol-
itz, Israeli author and theatrical
producer, and Rivka Raz. Israeli
singer, were the guest speaker and
singer at both events.
Joseph Nlegdell, campaign chair-
man, said that the sum of $216,500
subscribed at both events set the
highest record for Flint campaigns.
The goal for this year is $300,000.
Last year Flint contributed
$291,000. The previous high goal
was $240,000 in 1948.
With contributions 18 per cent
ahead of last year, Megdell said
he was confident that the $300,000
goal will be attained.

DR. SAMUEL MARGOSHES,

noted Jewish writer, was elected
chairman of the Congress for
Jewish Culture at a meeting of its
board of directors. The congress
promotes Yiddish culture in the
United States and in other coun-
tries. Dr. Margoshes called upon
American Jewry to help strengthen
the promotion of Yiddish culture
in this country and in other
lands.
