Russia Claims Matzo Baking Has Begun

ever, on Kropotkinskaya, in the
center of Moscow, the bakery oc-
cupies an entire house. Almost all
processes are mechanized. Either
a permanent representative of the
community or the rabbi himself
sees that all regulations for baking
matzos, envisaged by religious law,
are observed. Crispy, well - baked
matzo squares come off the con-
veyor. In the next room they are
packed in cardboard boxes and
then taken to the warehouse.
There they are turned over to cus-
tomers.
"'The entire equipment, induct-
ing the electric oven, we brought
from Riga,' Mikhailovich told me.
'It was more difficult as far as
the premises were concerned. We
had none of our own. The local
authorities readily offered us this

charges in the American press last

is made that there were no restric•

Brazil Embassy- Ass ures Delegation
on Stangl Case; Sea rch Oil for Others

JERUSALEM (JTA)—A spokes-
man for the embassy of Brazil as-
sured an eight-man delegation of
former partisans and anti - Nazi
fighters Tuesday that his govern- j
ment will not abandon its obliga-
tions in the case of Franz Stangl,
the former Nazi commandant of
the murder camps of Treblinka!
and Sobiboe., who was detained in
Brazil pending action on a request
for extradition by Austria.
The delegation had called at the
embassy to express concern over
reports that the Brazilian Ministry
of Justice might release Stangl
because of a statute of limitations.
Austria had asked for Stangl's re-
turn to try him on war crimes
charges. Brazil is one of the coun-
tries which had signed the United

gation that he would pass onto his
government their protest concern-

migrants in Brazil, many of
whom came here under Red
Cross auspices during 1951 and

other top war criminals. These
men, widely sought throughout

the world for years, are Martin
Bormann. Hitler's top deputy, and
Dr. Josef Mengele, the notorious
"selection doctor" at Auschwitz,

who chose the Jews to be put to

death.
Both Austria and West Germany
have for ma 1 1 y requested that
Stangl be extradited to stand trial

for his war crimes. The Brazilian

minister of justice has already
petitioned the Supreme Court to
permit Stangl's extradition, on the

members of your community with
matzot this year?' I asked the

synagogue leaaers. -
"'Not only our members but all

who wish to receive matzot as
well,' the rabbi replied.
"Last year the synagogues, and
there are three of them in Moscow,
all in all, baked some 80 tons of
matzot. This year the bakery on
Kropotkinskaya alone will put out
more than 100 tons. Besides this
bakery another two, true enough,
rather primitive bakeries are also
functioning in Medvedkovo, in the
North-Western district of Moscow,
putting out 800 kilograms of mat-
zot a day. For already se v e r al
weeks matzo baking has already
been underway, organized by the
Cherkizovo and Malakhovo syna-
gogues.
" 'How are orders for matzot

per kilogram of baked matzot and
turn over to the store-room the
corresponding amount of flour. And

thank God, everybody has plenty
of flour.' •
"'What formalities are observed
in accepting orders? I recall that
last year certain American papers
claimed that when flour was turned
over to the store-room, those wish-
ing to receive matzot had to pre-
sent their passports and g i v e
certain data about themselves'
" 'Yes, they indeed reported
such things,' Mikhailovich replied.
'But this was far from the truth.
The community has no need for
any data on those ordering matzot.
Neither in the past, nor this year,
are any documents demanded A

minister's petition either late this
Danielo Meyer, first secretary of month or early in April.

(In The Hague, meanwhile, the

Dutch foundation that contributes
funds to the Vienna Documentation
Center for Nazi War Crimes, tele-

graphed the Brazilian ambassador,
calling on the Brazilian govern-
ment to extradite Stangl to Aus-
tria as`soon as possible.)

Brazil's federal police au-
thorities, following through on
the a r r e s t of Stang!, have
launched a probe in depth of
all German Immigrants in that
country, suspecting that there
may be large numbers of former
Nazis and war criminals among
100,000 Germans who entered
Brazil in the last 15 or 16 years.

Stangl is being held in maxi-
mum security prisons. being moved

from one jail to another almost
daily, for fear that he may be

assassinated by Nazis in this coun-
try to keep him from exposing
the suspected Nazi ring in Brazil.
Thus far, according to police
authorities, he has discThimed all
knowledge about any organizations
devoted to protecting former
Nazis and war criminals. However,
it was learned, he is being inter-
rogated minutely, on suspicion

at

1952, is "a massive task," the
federal police said.

The majority of the German
immigrants had settled in the
southern sections of the country,
particularly in the states of Pa-
rana, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa
Catarina. Some of them represent
in Brazil some of West Germany's
top industrial and commercial es-
tablishments, and many of them
are members of various organiza-
tions of genuine religious trend
or of groups masking their politi-
cal orientation under' religious
cover. It is suspected by the
federal police that some of the
German organizations act as
camouflage for groups engaged in
aiding former Nazis and war
criminals.
These facts and fears are being
emphasized by virtually the en-
tire press in Brazil. 0 Glob°, the
daily newspaper with the largest
circulation in the country, warned
that every effort must be made to
find the Nazis and war criminals

in Brazil, no matter how skillfully
their tracks may have been cover-
ed by groups with official aims of a
religious, industrial, commercial or
other "innocent" character.
