Purim Celebrations Set This Weekend Celebrations and Purim go hand in hand, and all children will be able to celebrate the holiday this weekend. Among the schools and syna- gogues scheduling the fun are the following: The Jewish Center will look like Shushan, Persia, Sunday when hundreds of Queen Esthers, Mor- decais, Hamans and King Aha- sueruses attend the annual Center Purim Adolyada. Swimmers dressed as Purim characters will be in the center pool, while groups of children fish for them from the decks with rubber-tipped rods. A bonus prize will be awarded to whoever catches the Haman-fish. A booth-building project will be, undertaken by center teen and tween clubs, culminating in a youth carnival 8 p.m. Saturday. The evening will be topped off with a Purim Ball, beginning at 10 p.m., sponsored by the TAB social dance committee. There will be live music and Purim refresh- ments. A ticket admits members and non-members to the 20-booth carnival and the Purim Ball. Re- freshments are free. On Sunday, 2 to 4 p.m., the Gan Israel Scholarships to 5 Schools Vacation scholarships were presented to five Detroit Jewish day schools at a recent meeting of the Camp Gan Israel Scholarship Committee. Plans are for representation at the interfaith functions by the va- rious Jewish denominational groups which comprise the national reli- gious affairs committee of the CJC. A meeting of the committee also reviewed a special problem arising from the fact that the celebration of Dominion Day is scheduled to be observed on a Saturday. Prizes will be awarded to winners at the different game booths both Saturday night and Sunday after- noon. All pre-school children age 3 to 5 are invited to a special Purim carnival in room 218, 2 to 4 p.m. Everyone will be in costume. The Center Purim Tantzers will perform 1:30 to 4 p.m. in room 208. Clowns from grades 1 to 3 will do stunts. At 3 p.m. lovely maidens in grades 4 to 6 will perform an Oriental dance in Persian costumes. Everyone is invited to the Purim parade to be held 1 to 2 p.m. Sun- day. There will be floats built by teen and tween clubs, flag-bear- ers, Israeli dancers, a drum and bugle corps, cheerleaders and clowns. The parade will originate at the center Curtis parking lot and will proceed North to Pinehurst, then to Pickford Ave. From Pickford, it will continue west to Meyers and end at the Meyers parking lot of the center. The Purim parade coordinating committee consists of George Pearl, Vettes Teen Club; Joe Sni- derman, Jewish Parents Institute; Gail Gotthelf, Young Dancers Guild; Leo Neshes, Royals Teen Club; and Dan Stotter, Omens Club. Club children from grades to 6 will take part in the parade dressed in costume. The senior adult cafeteria in Shiffman Hall will be called Purim Nasharae. It will open for bagel and lox brunch at 11:30 a.m. and continue through- out the afternoon. Everything from hot dogs to hamantashen will be offered, at nominal prices. A "wishing well" to receive do- nations for the Jerusalem Y will be set up in the main lobby, and Mordecai's horse will give young- sters a ride. All branches of the United Hebrews Schools are planning carnivals and masquerade parties with contests and prizes awarded for the most original costume based on the Purim theme. Games and refreshments will also be part of the festivities. The Esther Berman Branch carnival will be held in the auditor- ium 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Students of Adas Shalom. Beth Aaron and Southfield branches have been invited to participate. The Borman and Cohn Branches will celebrate Purim jointly with a carnival Sunday at Beth Moses Congregation. The sisterhood is sponsoring the affair. Young Israel of Oak-Woods will conduct a Purim program 9-11 a.m. Sunday at the Young Israel Center. The nursery youngsters will also come in costume for their annual masquerade party Monday, during regular school hours. Bnai Moshe- Oak Park students held their cele- bration March 22. Par en t-teachers organizations plan and carry out the activities and act as hostesses. Parents are invited. After Purim services 7:15 p.m. Saturday at Beth Aaron, a spe- cial Purim family party Is planned for the entire congrega- tion. There will be entertain- ment, refreshments and a cos- tume parade for children, with prizes to be awarded to the most original costumes. Cong. Beth Hillel invites chil- dren of all ages to a Purim party 11 a.m. Sunday. There will be cos- umes, refreshments and a puppet show. Shaarcy Zedek children of kindergarten through 5th grades will dress in costumes for their school assembly Sunday morning during school hours. Prizes will be awarded. Cong. Bnai David's synagogue school will celebrate at a carnival 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the school building. Lapeed and Kochav youth groups will cosponsor the carnival. There will be prizes, games and food.
