The 25th anniversary of the establishment of The. Detroit Jewish News surely is an event worth observing and celebrating. I have been associated with the English-Jew- ish press as a writer, publisher and columnist for half a century and I cannot say that after all the years and anxieties I am satisfied with the results. The Jewish News of Detroit and several other rare and isolated publications may be furnishing a sort of oasis in the arid wilderness of the whole American Jewish press in the language of the country. I am therefore grateful for such comforts as are still available. BERNARD G. RICHARDS Director, Jewish Information Bureau * * * I congratulate you on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary in publication of Mich- igan's only Jewish newspaper. Through the years, The Jewish News has served Detroit and Michigan's citizens well from both news and commentary viewpoints. You, personally, are also to be congratulated for your keen insight and wisdom in guiding your newspaper to its present standing as an im- portant voice in local, state, national and inter- national affairs. Too, the contribution you have made to the field of journalism in general is truly estimable. Yours very sincerely, HENRY R, SLADEK, Chairman Wayne County Republican Committee. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Every Friday for these many years there comes into my home a welcome messenger, The Jewish News. On Erev Shabbos it linked me with my fellow Jews here at home and everywhere in the world — their joys and sorrows become mine. Other communities have told us that ours is a most wonderful one. We like to believe it, and if it is I personally want to give great credit for it to The Jewish News, its profound understanding of Jewish life, its editor's profound rendering of events, with his intellectual integrity and objective reporting, he has educated his great body of read- ers and helped us to become what we are. So today I pay tribute to Philip and Carmi and all who work with them to make this a valuable recorder of the happenings among the Jewish people of yesterday and today. Bless them all. DORA EHRLICH Friday, March 17, 1967-7 I join in extending my personal wishes and tribute to you upon your outstanding achieve- ments. God grant that the entire field of American Jewish journalism could maintain the high stand- ards of competence that you have displayed over the years. It is a tribute to you that week-in-and-week- out the News has done an outstanding job not only in discussing the important issues of the day, but especially in presenting to your readers the broad interests of Jewish life. SAM HARTSTEIN Director, Public Relations Yeshiva University * A good newspaper is something more than a mirror of the community in that it reflects not only the news and views of the community, but the probing concerns of an editor. In the case of a Jewish newspaper this adds the dimensions of Jewish ideals to journalistic ones. The Jewish News reflects a bright image of an editor who is not merely a fastidious chronicler of and articulate commentator on Jewish life, but very much an active participant in it as well. It is this happy combination, I think, that gives the Jewish News its splendid character. Mazel tov, Phil, on the twenty-fifth annivers- ary. Cordially, BERNARD SIMON, Public Relations Director International Bnai Brith.
