Prof. Moshe Stekelis, Famed
as an Israel Archeologist

JERUSALEM-Prof. Moshe Ste-
kelis, credited with the finding of
40,000 archeological items, includ-
ing four Stone Age skeletons, died
Monday while making plans for
another large-scale expedition. He
was 69.
Dr. Stekelis, professor of pre-
history at the Hebrew University,
collapsed in his home during a
meeting about arrangements for a
trip to the Jordan Valley, where
in 1959, he and two scientists of
the Hebrew University -found
traces of a civilization 250,000 to
500,000 years old.
Shortly after getting his degree
in archeology in 1924 at the Uni-
versity of Odessa, Prof. Stekelis
was exiled to Siberia for his Zion-
ist activities, which were illegal in
the Soviet Union.
He continued research in pre-
history and anthropology during
the three years he was in Siberia.
He moved to Palestine in 1928.
In 1960, his expedition dis-
covered -the remains of one of
the earliest human creatures on
the west bank of the Jordan
River at Afikim, two miles south
of the Sea of Galilee.

Killed in Auto Mishap

Lillian B. Hirschelman, an in-
surance agency supervisor, was
killed in an automobile accident
at Northland Dr. and Greenfield
Rd. March 9. She was 62.
Mrs. Hirschelman, born in To-
ronto, lived in Detroit 45 years.
She was supervisor of the Meadow-
brook Insurance Agency, 15670
W. 10 Mile, Southfield, and was a
member of the Questers Society
and a past officer of the Detroit
Insurance Women.
Mrs. Hirschelman, 25516 Lin-
coln. Terrace, Oak Park, leaves a
son, Michael; a daughter, Mrs.
Donald (M arily n) Ross; her
mother, Mrs. Dora Cohl; a brother,
Samuel; a sister, Mrs. Muriel Lip-

including also hundreds of arti-
facts and more than 35 kinds of
vertebrate animals.
In 1945, at the southwest shore
of the Sea of Galilee, Prof. Ste-
kelis found the remains of a com-
munity dating from the end of the
3rd and 4th Centuries before the
Christian era.
Thirteen years ago, he directed
an expedition to Mt. Carmel,
where the remains of a settlement
dating back perhaps 50,000 years
were found in a cave in the Zikh-
ron Yaacov region south of Haifa.

in Memory of Teacher
Mildred Friedenberg

Friends and colleagues of Mil-
dred Friedenberg, a victim of the
recent airplane crash near Kenton,
0., have established a tribute fund
to which contributions may be sent
in her memory.
Arrangements are being handled
by Miss Rose Poskel, assistant
principal at Pitcher School, where
Miss Friedenberg had taught art
since 1964. Miss Friedenberg was
in Columbus completing arrange-
ments for an exhibit of her water-
colors before taking the plane trip
back to Detroit. The crash took
the lives of 38 passengers.
The fund will be used to en-
courage art talent at the ele-
mentary school level, an area in
which -Miss Friedenberg was
particularly concerned.

Frank Hoffman, a charter mem-
ber of the Plumbing and Heating
Contractors Association of Detroit,
died Tuesday at age 84.
Mr. Hoffman, a retired plumb-
ing and heating contractor, lived
at 18517 Indiana. Born in Russia,
he lived in Detroit 56 years.
