School of Nursing

Dr. Charles E. Morton, minister
of the Metropolitan Baptist Church
of Detroit and a member of the
Michigan State Board of Education,
gave the commencement address at
the 19th graduation exercises of
the Shapero School of Nursing last
week.
The 27 graduates and more than
300 relatives and friends were on
hand in the Aaron DeRoy Auditor-
ium of the Jewish Center to hear
Dr. Morton.
The total number of practical
nurses trained by the Shapero
School since its inception in 1956
now exceeds 700.

The General Motors Choir will
be featured at the Diamond Jubilee
Concert of Cong. Beth Abraham
8:15 p.m. April 2 at the synagogue.
The choir replaces The Dan
Frohman Chorus, scheduled
earlier.
Also on the program will be a
trio of instrumentalists, members
of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra
and Cantor Shabtai Ackerman,
producer of the concert. Beth

portion of the program.

The conference on Jewish Mate-
rial Claims Against Germany last
year allocated a total of $40,000
for education, research and publica-
tion projects in Hungary.

lom Adult Institute Lecture Series
on "Culture and Morality in a
Changing World" 8:45 p.m. Tues-
day at the synagogue.
Rabbi Segal, organizer of the
series, will speak on "The Terezin
Requiem: A People's Profile in
Courage."
To illustrate the victory won by
the Jewish heroes in the book by
the same name by Joseph Bar, Rab-
bi Segal will present recorded se-
lections from Verdi's "Requiem,"
which forms the thematic crux of
the book.

Center, Southfield, 8:30 p.m.
March 30.
Carmi M. Slomovitz, ZOD presi-
dent, stated that this festival has
been planned in observance of
Music Month.
Cantor Sonenklar and Frohman
state that they have arranged their
program to include liturgical, Is-
raeli and folk songs.
Members of the Shaarey Zedek
choir includes:. George Richter,
Art Scherr, Joseph Siegal, Jack
Rosberg, Joseph Cantor and Max
Miller.

Karate Teacher to Lead
10 Sessions at Center

A Sixth Degree Black Belt teach-
er of Korean karate, one of three in
the entire world, will conduct a ten-
session course at the Jewish Cen-
ter, starting Sunday at 11 a.m.
Sang Kyu Shim, from Seoul,
Korea, has been practicing and
teaching karate for 16 years and
was chief instructor for this an-
cient Oriental type of self defense
to the U.S. Army from 1948 to
1963.
The course, which will be open
to teens and adults, male and
female, will concern itself with
techniques based on scientific
principles, speed, accuracy and
coordination.
According to Shim, the basic
purpose of karate is to teach men-
tal discipline and build character.
Contrary to popular belief, karate
is not only using the hands to break
wood blocks or other hard objects.
This phase of karate will be com-
pletely eliminated from the course
at the Center,

for educational, research and gen-
eral welfare projects in Argentina.
