THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 30—Friday, March 17, 1967 EDITORIAL Panic vs. Logic: Bigotry Reaps Harvest, Overshadowing Reality Gifts to Beth Isaac Help Synagogue Recover from Fire Cong. Beth Isaac of Trenton. re- couping from the act of arson that destroyed the sanctuary two weeks ago, has received further expres- sions of support from many sources. Stanley Ellias, a spokesman for the congregation, said that one of the most warm-hearted donors to date has been Irving I. Katz of Temple Beth El — "a regular Yid- dish Santa Clau•." Katz called Ellias to find out what he personally could do to help, and immediately arranged for a duplicator, an electric typewriter and a copier for use or ownership of the congregation. He then turned around, and from his own pocket, sent a check for $50 for the Tren- ton ministers' fund and 200 books of Judaism •.for the synagogue library. The original ministers-laymen's fund, which had . a three-pronged goal of raising funds for the rehabilitation of the synagogue, apprehension of the arsonist and his rehabilitation, has been dis- continued after contributing $1,700 to the synagogue. The De- troit Council of Bnai Brith con- tinues to coordinate a fluid, and the synagogue is raising money among its own members to pay off what was not covered by in- surance. (Insurance paid for 80 per cent of the more than $10,000 damage.) After a letter was sent out to all lodges, synagogues and Hebrew schools, some gifts of money and books were received by Bnai Brith. Beth Aaron Synagogue contributed 45 books, adding to Katz's 200 from his own library. Downtown Fox and Zieger lodges contributed $25 each to the campaign. Don Frankel and Morgenthau lodges had given ear- lier on their own. In addition, mem- bers have sent individual gifts: The Bnai Brith Council, 19951 Livernois, is still appealing for books, which it will store and cata- logue before delivery to Trenton. For information, call the office, DI 1-0863. The ministers of Trenton are raising among themselves enough funds to replace the prayerbooks destroyed in the fire. The city of Trenton offered a $1,000 reward and the Detroit News a $5,000 reward for informa- tion leading to the capture of the arsonist. Meanwhile, Trenton police are planning to question a 16-year- old Trenton youth in connection with the case today. Lt. Don Har- rison of the police department said the boy failed a series of lie-detector tests at the Redford State Police post Tuesday. However, such evidence is not - admissible in court, he said. The boy has had previous contacts with the police. Must it be a pogrom for a community or a country to recognize the dangers of anti-Sentimism? Did it call for the desecration of a synagogue for people in our midst to realize that the hoary hatred of the Jews flourishes? It seems as if it became necessary for the tragic occur- rence in Trenton to awaken the conscience of the larger Mich- igan community to an existing situation, to a recurring danger stemming from bigotry. If it were not for the circumstance of the burning of the inside of a synagogue, of the desecration of Toras, of the pro- faning of sacred objects and the treatment of prayerbooks like garbage, the spread of anti-Semitic literature and the swastika-daubing craze would be ignored to this very day. But there was an outraged desecration and that awakened many people, including one of our newspapers which offered two prizes. One of them is applicable—that $5,000 award for the burning of the synagogue. The o,ther, a $1,000 offer for the apprehension of distributors of anti-Semitic litera- ture, is laughable.
