Danny Raskin, 25 Years With The JEWISH NEWS "Reminisces" 11•1•1111., Advertising Manager's THA K YOU By Sidney Shmarak The 25th year of publica- tion of The Jewish News is a milestone which, as needs and staff increased, saw us move from the Penobscott building to the David Stott Building, to The Jewish News office building at its current location. Twenty-five years of faithful. and unstinting service fill the need of the com- munity, its organizations and its readers, bring- ing them news and features not found in any other medium in the city. Of these 25 years, it has been my privilege to be part of The Jewish News staff for 21 years. To our advertisers who find acceptance and patronage from our readers, my sincere thanks for their cooperation during these many years. My family and I join the community in wishing the Slomovitz family continued good health' and success for many years to come on this historic occasion. I6 Friday; • March. 17,. 1967' I view with pride the 25 years in which my column has ap- peared uninterruptedly in The Jewish News. On March 27, 1942, we wrote the first column. Much has hap- pened since then. The guys 'n gals we wrote about are today mothers, fathers, grandmothers and grandfa- thers, numbering among them many leading citizens of our community. Girls who won our annual Beauty-Personality Contests are still beautiful as today's parents. Fellows who were listed among the ten best-dressed men each year are still dapper. Remember "Where They Are"? How impor- tant 'mail was to the boys in World War II, and it was most gratifying each week to give names and addresses of boys fighting all over the world. And those War Bonds ! Boy how our readers would come through. Such a source of pride would be impossible to receive otherwise. Made us feel mighty good when we asked for blood, too, because very few turned us down. Then there was that poem we wrote for the boys at the Santa Ana Air Base in California. It became their "pin-up," and Bombardier Bob- by Shan sent us a picture of the bomb he was going to drop in Germany. The inscription read, "To Adolph Hitler From Danny Raskin." We could go on and on, but 25 years is a long time to elaborate upon. However, writing the Listening Post column for so many years has provided us with a deep sense of human relations that cannot be bought ! Yes, we are lucky. Lucky to be in a wonder- ful Jewish community filled with wonderful people. Thank you most kindly for your gracious de- votion throughout these 25 years. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Give or take a few years, The Jewish News and I are the same age. We've both grown up within the Detroit Jewish com- munity over the past 25 years. Of course, my real awareness of this unique, vital community was born some eight years ago when the editor and publisher of The Jewish News — "Mr. S." the girls in the front office called him—took• on the green journalism coed as "editorial assistant to the city editor." (I soon learned what was the dynamo be- hind the power plant: Mr. S. No journalism class had prepared me for a boss who could turn out more copy on his typewriter with two fingers in perpetual motion than an entire sec- retarial pool.) Those two years as a novice gave me an inkling of the life I could expect in this often-hectic, always-fascinating business. But the past three years as city editor have yielded such a harvest of experiences that the previous ones — even on a daily paper — are dull by comparison. And I don't mean, neces- sarily, the big news stories that throw the teletype machine into a fit, or even the per- sonalities who have submitted to my questions for interview. I mean the letter from a senior citizen long- ing for an apartment where she can live in dignity. I mean the talk with a college student seeking his identity in much the same manner that I sought mine some six years ago. (Everyone was yelling about apathy when I went to school. Now they're yelling about pro- test. I'll take the latter, any day.) It was a small, one-floor Hebrew school where I learned the aleph-bet. Today, the stories that cross my desk speak of branches in Southfield, of modern day schools in Oak Park, of a "cultural school" for professors' children in Ann Arbor. I read now of the dynamics that have sent the community ever northward in 21/2 decades. How much more real it is that I can remember visiting Buba on 12th Street. Now, I know grandmas who live on 12 Mile. To watch the remarkable changes of De- troit's Jewish community in the past 25 years has been the privilege of many readers of this paper. I cannot boast such a silver milestone. I can only say that for every bravo and every brickbat I've caught, smiled at or grimaced over in the past three years, I wish I could have another equally rewarding experience over the next three. And to Mr. S I say, "Gee, boss, I'm glad you hired that green college kid majoring in jour- nalism." A Word From The Devoted Corps in Our Front Office Messrs. Philip and Carnal Slomovitz: This is indeed an auspicious occasion, the 25th (Silver) Anniversary of The Jewish News, and we are all proud and happy to be a part of the organization, contributing (in our small way) to the publication of this wonderful weekly news- paper. Not only do we enjoy the work assigned to us, individually, but we enjoy working in such a pleasant, happy atmosphere and for such won- derful, understanding and intelligent men. It is difficult to say complimentary things to one's employers face to face, so we are taking this opportunity to extend our very best wishes, on this 25th Anniversary, via the mail, and to express our thanks for just being the kind of people you are. May we add that the Michigan Jewish commu- nity is very fortunate indeed to have a paper like The Jewish News with such informative, interesting and factual editorials and commen- taries. Long may they reign. Best wishes to you and yours, from a most grate- ful office staff. Marjorie Newberger Gloria Bellock Judy Glassman
