Ted Berkman's Biography of Mickey Marcus
Released as JPS Covenant Book for Youth

28—Friday, March 10, 1967

A dramatic period in Jewish his-
tory is recorded in a biographical
story that has already received
wide acclaim and which now is
available for young readers as a
Jewish Publication Society Cove-
nant Book.
Ted Berkman told the story of
Mickey Marcus superbly in a full
length book that was originally-
published by Doubleday in 1962. It
has appeared in a film which has
drawn and continues to draw large
audiences. Now "Cast a Giant
Shadow" appears in a shortened
form, as the Covenant Book, and
its impressiveness remains in the
condensation and its revised form
for the younger reader.
In its new form, the book re-
tains all the qualities of an his-
toric work, of the life story of a
great military • hero who loved
Shakespeare and poetry, who
abandoned his law practice to re-
turn to military service as a West
Point graduate, later to join the
Israeli forces in the battle for
Jerusalem, losing his life in the
latter struggle.
The love story—his wonderful
relationship with his wife Emma-

and his military skill, the many
interesting sidelines in a brilliant
career, the passion with which he
threw himself into the struggle for
the protection of the freedom of the
newborn State of Israel—these are
part of a very dramatic account
which elevates Berkman's story
to a high literary status.
Just as the original full-length
work about Mickey Marcus served
to intrigue the readers, to arouse
greater interest in the uphill battle
for justice and for freedom during
the Israel War of Independence,
so also does the Covenant Book
serve as a literary vehicle to em-
phasize the drama, to call atten-
tion to the private life of General
Marcus, to his affectionate and
faithful relationship with his wife,
to his genius as a military strate-
gist.
He knew nothing about Zion-
ism. He first heard about Theo-
dor Herzl when he became in-
terested in sharing in the effort
to assure security for the Israeli
fighters for freedom. But he had
been in the concentration camps.
He learned what the Nazis did.
He became aware of the need to
create a haven of freedom and

nounced by Charles H. Jordan, ex-
ecutive vice-chairman of the Joint
Distribution Committee.
Sponsored by the Paul Baerwald
School, the colloquium will feature
the role of the university in rela-
tion to social welfare and in edu-
cation for the helping professions.
Some of the issues to be examined
are: the definition of academic
freedom, its importance in modern
society; the role of the State in
financing university education; the
university's place in education for
professions; and the relationship
between the School of Social Work,
the university and the community.
Special emphasis will be placed on
the role of the university in the
developing countries with respect
to social welfare.
The Paul Baerwald School,
named after the late chairman of
the American Jewish Joint Distri-
bution Committee (JDC), was orig-
inally located in Paris and was
transferred to the Hebrew Univer-
sity of Jerusalem in 1958. A few
months ago the school moved into
a new $1,000,000 building on the
Hebrew University campus, a gift
from the JDC.

Israel Cabinet Body
Payment Guidelines;
96,000 Are Out of Work

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A minis-
terial economic committee of the
Israel Cabinet has approved regu-
lations for payments of jobless al-
lowances as well as the classifica-
tions of Israeli unemployed entitled
to receive the payments.
The ministers decided that the
first payments, to be made April 1,
would be made only to those who
had been jobless for at least two
months and who had been regis-
tered with a labor exchange for
34 days.
Labor Minister Yigal Allon re-
ported to parliament recently that,
as of the end of 1966, 96,000 Is-
raelis were jobless out of a labor
force of 857,000 workers.
A meeting of some 200 Israeli
rabbis including Chief Rabbis Isser
Yehuda Unterman and Yitzhak
Nissim and Religious Affairs Minis-
ter Zerah Warhaftig, expressed
grave concern at the "increasing
exploitation by missionaries of the
economic situation to obtain con-
versions."
A resolution condemning mis-
sionary activities in Israel noted
that some 200 conversions were
carried out in the country each
year.
