BENNETT broke all rec-
ords at the Roostertail . . . Cover
charge for Tony was $7 per person,
unheard of in Detroit, and he pack-
ed them in every night . . . On the
final eve of his engagement, the
Roostertail bosses bought cham-
pagne for the house as a toast to
this great star . . . Tony was won-
derful . . . a master showman .. .
a singer's singer . . . The lyrics
drip out of his mouth with such
heart-felt emotion . . . and he's
just as nice a guy off stage as he
is on.

THE CLAM SHOP on E. Grand
Blvd. gets better . . . We were
there recently and the place was
packed on a week night, but the
food was delicious and the service
very good . . . After our wonderful
dinner, we'll have to rank The
Clam Shop at the head of our list
for sea food in Detroit!

EVER TRY THE Sunday smor-

UNCLE ABE'S TAVERN on
Seward, W. of Woodward, is cele-
brating its second anniversary .. .
and owner Abe Chaben has done
quite a job! . . . The cafeteria-
style food is tasty, everybody most
congenial and Abe all you can ask
for in a host.

THE FOOD AND SERVICE is
still very good at Saksey's on
Woodward nr. Seven Mile . . . and
the intimate atmosphere is most
appealing . . . Leonard Randall
continues at the piano bar.

AT ONE of the first perform-
ances of Annie Get Your Gun in
New York, Dick Rodgers, the pro-
ducer, stood in the lobby during
the intermission with Irving Berlin,
composer of the hit-studded score
. . . Berlin moved away, and a
stout lady standing nearby obvious-
ly recognized him . . . She nudged
her husband and Dick heard her
say wonderingly, "Sam, to look at
him who would think?"

Leo L. Fuchs (of "Gambit") and
Hal E. Chester are producing and
Jack Smight is directing, for Uni-
versal the latest Second World War
epic currently before the cameras
in Hollywood, "Meanwhile, Far
From the Front," from a screen-
play by Peter Stone, with Paul
Newman and Italian - Yugoslav
beauty Sylva Koscina co-starring.
Charles D. Gray who portrayed
another one of the three accused
Nazi generals in the Sam Spiegel-
Anatole Litvak epic mentioned
above), together with Andrew Dug-
gan, Tom Bosley, John Williams
and Jacques Roux, this time will
make a quintet of Allied generals
captured by the Italians — as a
switch of character.

though the official dedication will
not take place until the spring, the
first residents of the new San

Fernando Valley units of the Los
Angeles Jewish Home for the Aged,
have already moved in because of
"urgent need."
Superior Judge Ben Koenig,
president, said applicants are con-
sidered solely on the basis of their
phiysical, psychological, religious
and social need for the home's
