Commander Tarlov lilts
Eisendrath Attack on
LBJ for Viet Policy

WASHINGTON—National Com-
mander Malcolm A. Tarlov of the
Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A.,
in a defense of President John-
son from the criticism of Rabbi
Maurice N. Eisendrath, president
of the Union of American Hebrew
Congregations, told the Rabbi that
"your extremist dissent can but
serve to delight and encourage
Ho Chi Minh."
Commander Tarlov, responded
to a letter assailing President
Johnson along with those who sup-
port the U.S. policy on Vietnam.
The JWV commander told Rabbi
Eisendrath: "It seems clear to me
that you speak for little more than
yourself when you address_ to the
President of the United States of
America a communication so re-
plete with open and thinly veiled
slurs. Certainly, you do not speak
for all or most of American Jewry,
or even most of Reform Jewry."
Earlier, in Atlanta, Tarlov said
in an address before a joint session
of the legislature of the state of
Georgia, that members of Con-
gress who would withhold appro-
priations required for the success-
ful prosecution of the war in Viet-
nam "give aid and comfort to the
Viet Cong and prolong the war."
At a function convened to confer
the "Man of the Year" Award of
Atlanta Post JWV, to former Con-
gressman Charles L. Weltner, the
JWV leader reported on his visit
earlier this month to Israel and
his observations on the explosive
Israeli-Syrian border. He made an
appeal to the United Nations to
act to restrain Syria, "a stooge of
Peking and Hanoi, before another
Vietnam erupts in the Near East."
