Much is being said about the
need for adult Jewish education...
Not to speak of Jewish education
for adolescents who know almost
nothing about Jewish heritage . . .
"A People's Epic" by Walter L.
Field, prefaced by Prof. Harry M.
Orlinsky and published by Bloch,
meets this need to a certain extent
. . . It also makes interesting and
educational story-telling for chil-
dren . . . The book presents high-
lights of Jewish history in verse ...
The highlights are well selected by
the author and the form in which
he presents them may stimulate
the readers to seek more extensive
knowledge on this or that period
or episode in Jewish history upon
which Mr. Field touches . . . The
style of the verse in which the
book is written makes its contents'
easy and enjoyable reading .. .
The chronicles in rhyme start with
the Patriarchal Age and present
the most important developments
in Jewish history century by cen-
tury till our present day . . . Thus
a panorama is given of about 4,000
years of Jewish events, starting
with Abraham and concluding with
the Nazi annihilation of 6,000,000
Jews and the establishment of Is-
rael • . . In between, there are
chapters—no longer than one page
each—relating the ups and downs
in Jewish history in the First and
Second Jewish Commonwealths,
the revolts and the subjugation of
the Jews, their high cultural
achievements in lands of exodus,
the Medieval times with the Span-
ish inquisition, the ghettos, and
the false Messiahs . . . High points
are also given on Jewish emigra-
tion to America, the Hassidic move-
ment, the Zionist movement—suf-
ficient to whet the appetite to read
more on these subjects . . . The
book also contains notes which
supplement the brief information
given in verse and which also make
good educational reading . . • All
and all, one can see that the book
is a labor of love by the author
with a purpose . . . The purpose is
—to bring Jewish history in as few
words as possible to American-
born Jews, young and old, and to
acquaint them with their proud
past , .. In this, Mr. Field deserves
high praise for his contribution to
further Jewish education in a novel
and attractive way.
