Plans Revived in NY
for Memorial to Honor
Victims of Holocaust
NEW YORK (JTA.—Plans to
erect a memorial in New York to
the 6,000,000 Jewish martyrs of
the Nazi holocaust were again set
in motion with the announcement
by the Committee to Commemorate
the Six Million Jewish Martyrs
of the formation of an art commit-
tee under the chairmanship of
David Lloyd Kreeger, Washington
attorney and art collector.
The sponsoring committee will
commission a new design for the
memorial in consultation with Jew-
ish historians and religious and
cultural personalities. The site of
the memorial will be alongside
the promenade at Battery Park
near the Emma Lazarus tablet,
facing the Statue of Liberty out in
the bay.
In 1964, the New York City Art
Commission rejected plans by the
project's sponsors for a memorial
in Riverside Park on the grounds
that the design was "too tragic."
Subsequently, a proposal by the
City Art Commission for a memo-
rial in a small park facing Lincoln
Center was rejected by the spon-
soring committee.
