• THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Archbishop's Statement 28—Friday, February 17, 1967 Eshkol Wants World Jewry to Gaff JERUSALEM (JTA) — A world Jewish gathering to include noted Jewish leaders from every profession and country is now being considered by the Israel government to mark this state's 20th anniversary in 1968, Prime Minister Levi Eshkol announced Monday in the Knesset (Parliament). The agenda of the confer- ence he said, would be the partnership between Israel Jewry and Jews outside of Israel. Eshkol? who presented the budget of the Prime Minister's Office, dedicated a major portion of his address to the problem of Jewish survival. He said that many Jews. in Israel, espe- daily the young ones, are not steeped in the ways of Jewish tradition, nor has Israel developed a culture of its own. The premier said that the two major centers of Jewish life outside Israel — the East and the West — "do not come to Israel for opposing reasons. Those who want to cannot, and those who can do not want to." Asserting that ties: between all three centers of Jewish life are essential for the very existence of the Jewish people, Eshkol said that Israel's youth must be imbued with Jewish values, and Israelis everyfhere, including students, must find ways to reach other Jews. The sharp drop in usage of the language by East European Jewry was reported in an interim analysis by Louis Rosenberg, re- search director of the Canadian Jewish Congress. The report indicated that, in 1961, the percentage of those able to speak both official languages, English and French, was higher among the Jews than among , any other ethnic group, except the French. * * Yiddish Journal Put Out by Rochester Center ROCHESTER, N.Y. One of the society's chairmen said the organization would ask the prelate to address a brother- hood meeting, a decision that may lead to resignations of some of the organization's officers. The society's three chairmen will meet with the cardinal on Friday. It is understood that if he fails to make a clear apology for his re- marks to Rabbi Max Nussbaum, chairman of the American Section of the World Jewish Congress, they would resign. The Tora of the Ellis Island Chapel which was used by genera- tions of Jewish immigrants in their first religious services in this country, is presented by Murray I. Gurfein (left), president of United Hias Service, worldwide Jewish migration agency, to Charles H. Silver, president of the new International Synagogue at the John F. Kennedy Airport. The airport has replaced Ellis Island as the principal port of entry for immigrants to the United States. Rabbi Nussbaum, during a visit to Germany two weeks ago, quoted the archbishop as citing alleged Jewish predominance in various aspects of German life as one of the explanations for Hit- lerism. The cardinal said the statement had been taken out of context and distorted. There was sharp contention at a recent society meeting between members of the Jewish community who favored holding the Brother- hood Week celebration, and had visited the cardinal recently to apologize for the "misunderstand- ing" over his statement to Rabbi Nussbaum, and Christians, who were opposed to any compromise over the issue and demanded that the churchman issue an outright apology.
