Friday, February 17, 1967-25 News Brevities Joseph Pollicoves 31a rk ! THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Golden Wedding Date Epstein Sculptures Exhibit to Starts Here A retrospective exhibition of sculpture and drawings by Sir Jacob Epstein will open Tuesday, at the London Arts-Detroit gallery in the Fisher Building, to run through March 18. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. Some 50 pieces of sculpture and 25 drawings from the collection of Lady Epstein will be shown. All but two sculptures are for sale at prices ranging from $400 to $20,000. The works range in time from 1904 to the late 1950s — from the New York-born sculptor's period of controversy to that of his entry into the British establishment, when he was knighted by the Queen Mother, and the British Arts Council sponsored a giant retro- spective of his work. The early period is represented by a severed head from Epstein's controversial (and now destroyed) group of nude statues in the Strand of London, the most recent periods by portrait heads. Portrait subjects include Bernard Shaw, Augustus John, Nehru (twice), Haile Selassie, Yehudi Menuhin and Professor Lucy Donnelly. A self-portrait in cap (1912) is among the earliest pieces. An unusual feature of the show is the group of sculptured studies of hands — 13 in all. Many are hands of infants and children. One is a portrait of the hands of Mlle. Nijinska. Included are several studies for Epstein's most famous post-war commission, "St. Michael and the Podiatrist Dr. MATHEW BORO- ROBERT B.
