End to 'Poison of Racial Prejudice'
Urcied
ifitrotherhood Message

Dr. Sterling W. Brown, president
of the National Conference of
Christians and Jews, said today
that "the same methods of educa-
_, tion, of dialogue, of teaching, of
person - to - person communication
and reasoned confrontation which
have brought about a new era of
ecumenical understanding in Amer-
ica must be applied with even
--- greater vigor to eradicate the poi-
;on of racial prejudice that is dis-
zupting our country today."
The NCCJ president aimed his
remarks at next week's 1967 Na-
tional Brotherhood Week, - spon-
sored annually since 1934 by the
National Conference, with Ameri-
cans from the President of the
United States through all levels
of citizenship, lending support to
its observance. President John-
son, like his predecessors, is this
year's National Brotherhood Week
honorary chairman.
In his statement for Brother-
hood Week, the President said,
"Brotherhood simply means giv-
ing to others the rights, respect
5
and dignity they deserve.
"It is a concept that was woven
into the very fabric of our Consti-
tution and Bill of Rights. In re-
cent years, civil rights legislation
has sought even more explicitly to
guarantee equality for all Ameri-
cans regardless of race, color or
creed.
"Unfortunately, the gap between
principle and practice still remains.
It is our task — and our respon-
sibility — to make certain that
the gap is closed."
Troy V. Post, chairman of the
board of Greatamerica Corpora-
tion and chairman of Braniff In-
ternational Airways, has been
named National Brotherhood Week
chairman for 1967.
Dr. Brown pointed out that the
National Conference here has been
a pioneer in the ecumenical move-
ment.
"Long before the words 'inter-
faith dialogue' became popular,
the National Conference was bring-
ing together Protestant, Catholic,
Jewish and Greek Orthodox clergy
and lay leaders to ameliorate the
religious hostilities that divided
America."
"Let us make a searching ex-
amination to determine what
specific things need to be done
to make America a safer, a bet-
ter, and a finer place in which
to live. Then, working together
during the 51 weeks following
Brotherhood Week, let us take
whatever steps may be neces-
sary — with all the knowledge
and resources at our command
—to insure that all Americans
are treated equally as citizens
of this democracy and as broth-
ers in the family of mankind."
The regional co-chain-hen of the
Detroit Round Table of the Na-
tional Conference of Christians
and Jews are Lee Hills, publisher
and executive editor of the Detroit

chairman; and Earl J. (Jay) Wat-

consternation and confusion." He
said that there was no real con-
sensus as to what black power
meant and what it sought to ac-
complish.
However, he asserted that to the
extent that black power expresses
the desire and intention of dis-
enfranchised Negro Americans "to
participate in the political processes
of this nation, or to achieve in-
dependent economic status or to
become meaningfully involved in
the life of the community, it is in
accordance with the democratic
traditions of our country."

Reform Rabbis Blame
War Involvement for
Civil Rights Standstill

NEW YORK — The Central Con-
ference of American Rabbis placed
part of the blame for "lagging civil
rights gains" on the U.S. govern-
ment's preoccupation with winning
the war in Vietnam.
The association of more than
1,000 Reform rabbis in the United
States and Canada put equal re-
sponsibility for the rights slowdown
upon "liberal whites who no longer

place the issue on top of their list
of priorities."
These views were made in con-
nection with the release of the
CAR's anual message in observance
of Race Relations Sabbath.
Rabbi Irwin Blank of Tenafly,
N.J., chairman of the CCAR's
committee on justice and peace,
declared that "the rabbis this
year would direct their congre-
gational participation on three
prime needs for the Negro—equal
housing, job opportunities- and
education."
In its criticism of the government,
the CCAR statement charged that
national leaders have failed to pro-
vide the necessary central direction
to both Congress and the American
people in placing equal importance
upon the needs of the Negro popu-
lation and 'other minorities, saying
"a nation whose heart is engaged
in a war abroad cannot give that
same heart to a war against racial
injustice at home."
Adding "A society massively
mobilized to police the world cannot
liberate the imagination, energy,
and resources necessary to mount
a full-scale attack on the blight of

poverty. We can achieve racial jus-
tice and abolish poverty only with-
in the framework of peace. We
cannot fight two wars, one abroad
and one at home."
They called upon the Federal
government to actively engage and
provide "a significant housing pro-
gram for low income families in
areas of racial exclusion through
building, and through rent sub-
sidies," as well as legislation by
Congress to establish a clear na-
tional policy making it both "moral-
ly and legally wrong to discrimin-
ate in housing."

Vice President Calls Bias
Danger to Human Survival
in AJCommittee Pamphlet

NEW YORK — Vice President
Hubert H. Humphrey, in a candid
assessment of human rights
throughout the world, has char-
acterized prejudice as one of the
"greatest dangers to human sur-
vivial today." He asserted that if
the United States does not succeed
in solving its problems of pre-
juclice, "the cause of world peace
and freedom will have suffered a
serious — perhaps fatal — set-
back."
The vice president made these
statements in a pamphlet "Race
in a Changing World," issued here
on the 158th birthday of Abraham
Lincoln by the American Jewish
Committee in its "American Con-
versations" pamphlet series.
Humphrey decried the term
