The Man Closest to Lincoln

brought about the state of mind
of the Southern leaders.
Dr. Zacharie was a kind of Abe
Nathan of our own days, a plain
man of the people who seeing the
failure of the statesman and dip-
lomats, thinks the people should
assert themselves and try to bring
about peace.
Clemenceau once said that war
is too critical a thing to be left to
the generals alone. In the same
vein, we may say that peace is too
important a thing to be left to the
politicians and diplomats.
