Disappointment Turns Into 'Sound of Music'
for Academy-Award W inner Julie Andrews
A major disappointment has
turned out to be the best thing
that ever happened to Julie An-
drews, who stars in producer-direc-
tor Robert Wise's "The Sound of
Music, opening Wednesday at the
Mai Kai and Camelot theaters.
Broadway's original "My Fair
Lady" admits that it was a blow
when she was passed over for the
film version of her stage success.
"But," she adds, "I see now that
is was a blessing. If that had been
my first picture, I might have been
typed."
But when it did come, Miss An-
drews' first film role won her the
highest honor the cinema world
has to offer, an Academy Award
as best actress for Walt Disney's
"Mary Poppins." This was followed
quickly by "The Americanization
of Emily," in which she does no
singing at all, • and then moved
directly into "The Sound of Music."
Written by Ernest Lehman from
the Rodgers and Hammerstein
Broadway smash, "The Sound of
Music," was filmed in DeLuxe
Color for 20th Century-Fox release.
It received five Academy Awards
including Best Picture and Best
Direction. -Starring with Miss An-
drews is Christopher Plummer,
and it co-stars Eleanor Parker,
Richard Haydn and Peggy Wood.

Climaxing the end of the first
semester at OPHS was the annual
Gold Diggers Ball. This dance was
set up to honor all boys throughout
the school. In preparation for the
dance, girls had to take the initia-

that "special guy" to go with them
to the dance.
Highlighting the evening was
the crowning of the Gold Diggers

The first building of a new Hebrew University compound of
marine biology research units is nearing completion in Eilat and was
shown this week to a number of the world's leading oceanographers
attending an international conference in Israel. When completed —
with several more buildings, library and living quarters — the
research station will be a year-round facility for conducting oceano-
graphic research in the Gulf of Eilat and the Red Sea. In addition
to the Eilat station, Israel is planning a national center for oceano-
graphic research in the Mediterranean, near Haifa.
