WASHINGTON — When Rep. Joshua Eilberg, Pennsylvania Democrat, occupied his new con- gressional office, one of his first acts was to affix a mezuza at his door. This act typified the convic- tion of the newly-elected, 45-year- old Congressman. As a freshman Congressman, Eilberg concedes that he has a lot to learn. His enthusiasm and perception indicate that he will learn rapidly. He has not forgot- ten his Depression years as a child in Philadelphia. His father, who worked as a janitor, saw to it that he attended Talmud Tora daily. Today, Eilberg confesses to rebelling against the discipline of 0 r t h o d o x instruction. But this failed to alter his devotion to Jewish education. His commitment is evident in the active role of his wife as a Jewish social worker and the serious religious studies of both their two children. Eilberg is a trustee of Beth Emeth Syna- gogue and holds membership in Bnai Brith, the Jewish War Vet- erans and other groups. leader in the history of Pennsyl- vania. He fought for a fair Sunday closing law to exempt Jews and Seventh Day Adventists from an arbitrary regulation. His bill passed the House, but there was no Eilberg to push it through the State Senate. During the opening days of C on g r es s, Democratic Majority Leader Carl Albert of Oklahoma noted Eilberg's record as a ma- jority leader of the Pennsylvania State Legislature. When Albert had to leave the floor, he asked Eilberg to take over for him as acting majority leader. Eilberg's sponsorship of fair employment and civil rights legis- lation drew the fire of anti-Semites. He sponsored a resolution calling on the Federal Communications Commission to review the license of a radio station that promoted a bigoted evangelist. The preacher later campaigned against him with slurs against Jewish organizations. Eilberg served in the Pacific as a naval lieutenant during World -War II. Duty took him to Okinawa and the Chinese coast with Fleet Air Wing No. 1. _ He was graduated from Temple Law School and gained notice as a bright young assistant district attorney in Philadelphia. In 1954 he won election from Philadel- phia's Oxford Circle area to the state legislature. He was repeat. edly re-elected to Harrisburg and became the first Jewish floor chrogirtatiori MURRY KOBLIN FOR THE ADV.
