Mr. Shitreet, who was 72, stepped down from his govern- ment post four months ago, after serving uninter- ruptedly in all governments, since the rebirth of Israel in 1948. Shitreet Born in Tiberias, of a Moroccan family, Mr. Shitreet began his ca- reer as a police inspector in his native city. He rose to assistant superintendent under the British regime, the highest rank a Pales- tine native could then attain.
