WASHINGTON (JTA) — Secre-
tary of the Interior Stewart Udall,
who is leaving Thursday for a tour
of Middle Eastern countries, denied
here explanations by State Depart-
ment officials that Israel is not on
his itinerary because Israel failed
to invite him.
Replying to a query from Rep.
Seymour Halpern, New York Re-
publican, Udall said: !`There is only
one reason why I am not planning
to go to Israel, and that is that the
status of our cooperative efforts
with Israel does not require it."
In his letter to Udall, Rep. Hal-
pern also took exception to reports
that the Saudi Arabian government
had told the interior secretary that
he would be unwelcome if he visited
Israel on the same journey.

Ukrainian Writer Demands
More Yiddish Books Be
Published in Soviet Union

NEW YORK (JTA) — For the
first time in recent years, a Soviet
Ukrainian writer publicly called for
the publication of books in the Yid-
dish language, it was revealed in
the latest issue of the Digest of
the Soviet Press, published here in
English.
The publication contained ex-
cerpts of a speech by Yuri Smolich,
a Ukrainian author, who denounced
the failure to print books by authors
writing in Yiddish and other lan-
guages of Soviet Ukraine. He com-
pared the present lack with the
situation before World War II, when
the Ukraine had a special publica-
tion house for issuing books in
languages of minorities.
