In discussing his lecture theme, Dr. Goldman pointed out that Jew- ish artists such as Modigli ani, Pascin and Chag- 'all played a prominent role in the develop- ment of modern art. The lecture will be illustrat- ed by slides and Dr. Goldman Pictures. Dr. Goldman, assistant editor of the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, has written many articles and papers for scholarly journals. His most recent book, "The Sacred Portal," deals with his area of specialization, the history of arts of the Near East. This lecture, presented under the joint sponsorship of the art commission and adult education committee, is the second of Shaar- ey Zedek's "Giants in Art" series. The public is invited without charge. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, January 27, 1967-13 Ratio of Communist Jews Below Population Norm ROME (JTA) — An Italian Jew- ish senator who is a leading mem- ber of the Italian Communist Par- ty declared in a lecture here that there was a smaller percentage of Jews in the various Communist movements than their percentage of the total 'population in the var- ious countries with such move- ments. Sen. Umberto Terracini, speak- ing at the Weizmann Club on "Communism and the Jews," said that anti-Semites and Fascists have consistently linked Jews with communism to discredit them. He declared that some Jews have turned to communism because of their position as "an oppressed minority in search of a revolution- ary liberation." The senator also again denoun- ced the treatment of Russian Jews He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap. — Ecclesias- tes 11:4 ALLEN STEINBERG "I can get it for you wholesale" Morris Buick Co. 14500 W. 7 Mile at James C,ouzens 342-7100 by the Soviet authorities. The number of such deaths in Israel, the doctors said, amounts to approximately 28 per cent of the total mortality rate. In the United States the rate of deaths from heart disease is 38 per cent; in England and Scandinavian coun- tries, 32 per cent. Special physical exercises have been introduced for heart patients which enables many of them to re- sume even physical labors in the building profession and metal in- dustries. Westminster Archbishop Preaches in Synagogue LONDON (JTA)—John Cardinal Heenan, the Catholic primate of Britain, told the congregation of the Reform Synagogue of Manches- ter Jan. 21 that the Vatican Declar- ation on Catholic-Jewish relations was "not perfect" from the Jewish standpoint, but that it was "a great advance from Christian documents of the past referring to Jews." His appearance was the first by a car- dinal in a British synagogue. The cardinal said that "to many it seems strange that a cardinal of the Catholic Church should be in a synagogue on the Jewish Sab- bath." lie told the congregants that it was really not strange be- cause they all believed in God. He added that his visit was "not for me a social exercise. This is a religious action, a spiri- tual pilgrimage to the people who represent the old religion from which my faith has sprung." Cardinal Heenan, Archbishop of Westminster, was a staunch sup- porter of the original strong dec- laration presented to the Second Vatican Council. The final version, which was adopted and formally promulgated by Pope Paul VI, was diluted, but it condemned anti- Semitism, rejected the charge of collective deicide against the Jew- ish people in the crucifixion of Jesus and urged "fraternal dia- logues" between Catholics and Jews. in tomato si I La< S iii---MMENgentr l'15,12 OZ.
