THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, January 20, 1967-39 Barney Ross Loses Battle With Cancer; Was Boxing Champ BARNEY ROSS Barney Ross, a former welter- weight champion, one of the most sensational figures in the boxing world for a number of years, died of throat cancer Wednsday at the age of 57. He had won battles against nar- cotics, was a U.S. Marine hero and had participated in many philanthropic causes. He had won and lost champion- ships and he had become a legen- dary figure in boxing. * * * A week before Ross' death, Jesse Silver, JTA sports columnist wrote: "Benefits held recently in New York and Chicago for Barney Ross have been so successful that Ross' family have asked that no more be considered. Other cities were eager to hold similar benefits for the former champion who has cancer of the throat. "The money, $32,000, will be used to defray his medical ex- penses. Ross is under treatment at the Veteran's Administration Research Hospital in Chicago. "In New York, a boxing show was held at Sunnyside Gardens which was attended by many for- mer boxing champions. Ross was unable to attend, but talked to the crowd by telephone over a loundspeaker. In Chicago, films of Ross' great fights were shown at a Loop theater. 'The family now feels that all of Barney's needs have been met and that his friends have contrib- uted enough,' said a brother, Ben Rasof of Chicago. 'We are dis- turbed by reports that other ben- efits are being planned. If good- hearted people want to donate money, it should go to a cancer fund or some other worthy cause."' 1 OBITUARIES Architect B. L.
