DFT Withdraws Request
to Close Schools on Holy
Days ; Opposition Fights

The president of the Detroit
Federation of Teachers, Mary Ellen
Riordan, announced at the union's
general membership meeting Jan.
12 that the federation was with-
drawing its request to close schools
on the Jewish High Holy Days for
this year. Withdrawal was con-
ditional, she said, on the likeli-
hood that the number of substi-
tutes would be sufficient, making
it unlikely that there would be
unfilled calls on those days.
Robert S. Melamed, chairman of (
the Detroit Teacher Committee for.
More Vigorous Union Leadership, ,1
an opposition group within the
federation, stated that his organ-
ization would continue to demand
the closing of the public schools
on those days.
Melamed, a teacher at Cooley
High School, stated that substi-
tutes have never been in adequate
supply for the Jewish High Holy
Days, and as a consequence non-
Jewish teachers have had to suf-
fer unbearable teaching loads on
these occasions.
Further, Melamed said, Jewish
teachers are discriminated against
because they must use their sick
days for those holidays, leaving
fewer days available for sickness,
injury or other emergencies.
