Police Aide Locke Next Lecturer at Adult institute

Adas Shalom's lecture series on
"Culture and Morality in a Chang-
ing World" will feature Hubert G.
Locke, educator and spokesman for
liberal causes, 9 p.m. Tuesday in
the social hall.
Appearing under the auspices of
the Adult Study Institute, his sub-
ject will be "The Law and Urban
Life."
Locke has
served as a Chris-
tian minister and
as executive di
rector of the Cit
izens Committee
for Equal Oppor-
tunity. On leave
from his post of
Locke
director of the of-
fice of religiousaffairs at Wayne
State University, he is serving as
administrative assistant to the De-
troit commissioner of police.
Locke has received numerous
awards for his service to the inter-
faith cause and for his contributions

to the community.
Rabbi Jacob E. Segal serves as
moderator for each Tuesday eve-
ning lecture, followed by discus-
sion from the floor.

Higher Learning in Army

HAIFA (ZINS) — The Israeli
Defense Army recently broadened
its educational facilities for the
benefit of those desirous of ob-
taining a high school diploma, ac-
cording to an announcement from
official sources.
The teachers engaged are gradu-
ates of the Hebrew University now
serving in the armed forces, as
well as professional educators as-
signed by the ministry of educa-
tion. The aim of these courses is
to qualify soldiers for admission
into a university after completing
their military service.

Chajes, as the composer, will
_ be represented in the perform-
ance of his "Palestinian Melo-
dies for Strings" and "Hebrew
Suite for Clarinet, Strings and
Piano," both of which had suc-
cessful debuts last year at Adas
Shalom.
The synagogue's chamber or-
chestra, conducted by Chajes, will
perform these selections.
Tenor Cantor Harold Orbach of
Temple Israel will sing "Sh'ma
Kolenu" as well as an aria from
Chajes' opera "Out of the Desert."
Cantor Fenakel's "Haneros Ha-
lolu"' will be performed by the
choir and sisterhood chorale, with
soprano Shirley Benyas. Mrs.
Jaffe and Sidney Resnick, bari-
tone, as soloists. Bella Goldberg
is accompanist for many of the
numbers.

the 14th annual Festival of Jewish
Music 8 p.m. Sunday at Adas
Shalom Synagogue.

Fenakel, the concert will feature
among its works such Yiddish
songs as "Folkslied — Y'rusholo-
yim" and "Motele" sung by tenor
Cantor Simon Bermanis of Cong.
Ahavas Achim. "Mame Loshn"
will be performed by mezzo so-
prano Ann Jaffe and Rev. Larry
Vieder, along with the Adas Sha-
lom Synagogue choir and sister-
hood chorale.
An aria from "Samsoti and De-
lilah" by Saint-Saens will be sung
