The students raised funds for the cross and the education of its youth commissioned John Alltucker of the Eugene Sand and Gravel Co. to design and build a cross of concrete in time for Easter 1964. When the fraternity applied for a city- permit, a storm of contro- versy arose on the university cam- pus and in the city of Eugene. No official action was taken by the city. With the approach of Christ- mas 1964, Alltucker decided to give the giant cross to the city as a gift. With no advance notice to anyone, workmen hauled the cross to the top of Skinner's Butte on Nov. 28, 1964 and set it in place. In mid-December 1964, the Eu- gene City Council by a vote of 7-1, granted the necessary building and electrical permits all post facto, which legalized the action of the contractors and gave official sanc- tion to the presence of the cross on the city-owned hill. (In New York, Howard M. 'There Was a President' --Complete Record of Kennedy Assassination, Events That Followed in Dallas "Seventy hours and 30 minutes: the weekend no one will ever for- get." This is the explanatory legend appended to the illustrated hard- cover volume, "There Was a Presi- dent," that has been published by Random House. It starts with photos of the arrivals of the Kennedys in Dallas, their alighting from the plane, their trip through the city, the fatal shooting. Then comes the title page and the text: t h e commence- ment of NBC tel- evision announce- ments on Friday, Nov. 22, 1963; 1:45.03 p.m., con- Kennedy tinuing through Monday, Nov. 25, 1963, 1:17 a.m. The text is from the Random House original unillustrated "Sev- enty Hours and Thirty Minutes." It is a complete record in radio and TV announcements, in pic- tures covering the Dallas trip, the shooting, the anguish of the family, Lee Harvey Oswald's arrest, Jack Ruby's shooting of Oswald. There is drama, pathos, anguish, suffering, suspense — in words and pictures — in a volume well titled. There is no doubt that this work, in large format, attractively print- ed, will serve as an important historical document.
