Anti-Soviet Meeting Held
on Date of Jews' Death

NEW YORK (JTA)-The 25th
anniversary of the execution by the
Soviet authorities of Henryk Erlich
and Victor Alter, leaders of the
Jewish Labor Bund in Poland, were
observed here Sunday with a pro-
test meeting at Town Hall.
Several hundred people attended
the meeting which was organized
by the Jewish Labor Bund in New
York and sponsored by a number
of Jewish labor organizations.
Principal speakers at the meet-
ing included Adolph Held, Norman_
Thomas, Dr. Emanuel Scherer
others.
Erlich and Alter, in addition \‘_/ --1
being leaders of the Bund, were
also members of the city council
in Warsaw and members of the
executive board of the Warsaw
Jewish community.
Upon the occupation by Soviet
forces of eastern provinces of Po-
land, following the entry of the
Nazi army into Warsaw, the two
Bund leaders were arrested and
kept in Soviet jails for more than
two years.
Later they disappeared without
a trace, but the Soviet ambassador
in Washington notified labor lead-
ers in this country that the two
had been executed.

Natural Population Hike
in Israel Hits 50,000

JERUSALEM (ZINS) - Israel's
natural increase of its population
amounts to 50,000 a year, accord-
ing to the central government of-
fice of statistics. The number of
live births totals 65,000, while
deaths are recorded at 15,000, in-
cluding 2,000 infants.
First place in natural growth is
credited to Shafram where the rate
of live births is 47.7 for each 1,000
residents. Second in line is Naza-
reth with 41.6 births for each 1,000
residents.
Among Israeli Jews, first place
in natural growth is given Eilat
with 33.7 births per 1,000. Beer-
sheba follows with 29.7 births, Ti-
berias with 27.6, Jerusalem 24.3,
Tel Aviv 15.3, and Haifa 17.5.
The largest mortality rate is re-
corded in Tel Aviv-7.4 deaths for
each 1,000 residents. Natanya
comes next with 7.1, and Safed, 7.
Eilat enjoys the smallest mortality
rate with only 2.5 for each 1,000
residents. This is ascribed to the
fact that it has the most youthful
population in the country.
