A program for a year's study in Israel for second year American high school students, beginning with the 1967-68 academic year will be offered by the America- Israel Secondary School Program, it was announced by Rabbi Mor- decai Chertoff, director of the newly organized group, which has offices at 515 Park Avenue, New York. Two leading Israeli secondary schools, Alonei Yitzchak in the Shomron Valley about five miles from Caesaria, and Shafir's Yeshivat, Or-Etzion, in the Lachish area, near Ashkelon, are partic- ipating in the program. Both schools will offer full American second year high school programs augmented by special courses in the Hebrew language and Israeli studies. The curriculum to be of- fered has been approved by an advisory committee of noted American educators and will be supervised by the Israel ministry of education. The American cur- riculum has been generally pat- terned on that of the American Embassy School in Herzliah, main- tained largely for the children of English speaking personnel which similarly prepares students for re: turn to American schools. The academic year, to begin next September, will be preceded by a six-weeks course in Hebrew, be- ginning in July, at an ulpan in Israel. The general courses will be taught in English with the Judaica courses taught in Hebrew as much as possible. Full information on the new program, including detailed descrip- tions of the curricula, are available on request to the America-Israel Secondary School Program, 515 Park, New York 10022, or from Is- rael consular offices. CHICAGO (JTA—Plans to raise $250,000 to establish a chair of canon law in the Hebrew Univer- sity in Jerusalem, from which the Most Rev. John P. Cody, Roman Catholic archbishop of Chicago would deliver the first lecture, were announced here by John Crown, a lawyer, and Thomas A. Lewis, a stockbroker, who head a special fund-raising committee. Mayor Richard J. Daley is honorary chair- man of the group. A $100-a-plate dinner to honor Archbishop Cody will be held Jan. 25 in the Palmer House. More than 1,500 persons are expected to at- tend, Crown said. Crown present- ed a check for $25,000 to the fund in 1943 was to adopt a Jewish baby and pass him off as one of their own children until the end of the war. At one point during the war, the entire Hulstein family was held at gunpoint during a Gestapo raid on their home and threatened with death unless they revealed informa- tion about hiding places of Jews and identities of resistance work- ers. The Hulsteins revealed nothing, but the Gestapo eventually suc- ceeded in capturing 50 of the resis- tance workers who were sent to concentration camps along with Hulstein. He was released two months later when the Nazis re- alized the end of the war was ap- proaching. In ceremonies here, Bill Sim- mons, chairman of a special com- mittee formed to raise money for the Hulsteins with the cooperation of the Canadians Jewish Congress, tore up the mortgage and an- nounced the gift of the pension on behalf of the Vancouver Jewish community. Israel Army Cancels Presentation of Levin Play at Otto Frank's Request Levin sanctioned the Soldier's Theater production on the grounds that the "Jewish people has an immutable right to its own cultural material." He acknowledged having given up all his legal rights to his ver- sion of the play in 1959, but said the army's decision to cancel the current production was "scan- dalous." In a letter accompanying the 1959 settlement, Levin had proni- ised "not to circularize rabbis or any other groups or persons on the Anne Frank subject or stim- ulate either public or private con- troversy about the diary or my part in relation to it." Now he said, however, "If I signed such an agreement and gave away my rights to continue such a discussion, then I was greatly at fault and I repUdiate it." in behalf of the Crown family, ac- tive supporters of charitable works. Crown, who is Jewish, and Lewis, who is a Catholic, were selected as leaders of the cam- paign to symbolize the inter-faith effort to establish the chair.
