Berger's speeches Review Centers' Impacts Austrian-Engineered Jet Being Tested by Egypt The impact of Jewish Center activities in this country, ideologi- cal aspects of such communal tasks, the variety of services rendered by Jewish Centers are accounted for in "Graenurn Berger Speaks on the Jewish Center," published by the Jewish Education Committee Press (426 W. 58th, NY 10019). ISTANBUL (ZINS) — Egypt is testing a supersonic jet engine de- signed by Austrian and German engineers which, according to re- ports, is destined for "defensive military use against Israel." The engine, called E300, may be ready for production in 1968. It was designed and being built at a closely guarded aircraft fac- tory south of Cairo. The Egyptian aircraft program is headed by Ferdinand Brander, a 61-year-old Austrian engineer, who helped to develop engines for Germany's Junker bombers during World War II. Berger, now the Jewish Centers' consultant in New York, held a number of posts in Staten Island and Bronx. This volume, the preface to which was written by Dr. Maurice Hoexter, executive vice president of the Federation of Jewish Philan- thropies of New York, contains the Young Zionist's Eook Pays Tribute to Memory of Late Moshe Sharett Not only the tributes of great men in Jewry paid to Mr. Sharett but some of the late Zionist lead- er's own declarations on the move- ment and on Israel are part of this valuable record. Rosensaft refers to Mr. Sharett as "an aristocrat, a member of the select nobility into which one can be accepted only by virtue of ex- ceptional character, high principles and devotion to great ideals." The text corroborates this judgment. As the first tribute to appear to the eminent leader since his death, Rosensaft's book is a valuable ac- quisition by the library dealing with Zionism and Israel. texts of papers and addresses by Berger. Many Center functions are evaluated and the links with Jewish communities, with Is- rael, with the synagogues, are ex- plained. Berger views the Jewish Cen- ter as "a fourth force in Ameri- can Jewish life"—a force emerg- ing supplementary to the three religious groupings. In the ex- planatory chapter in which he thus evaluates the Center move- ment, Berger reviews develop- ments in Jewish life, including the rise of the Jewish Day School movement, and he declares about the Center: "It is imbued with everything that is good in mod- ern times and it looks forward to finding solutions for man's difficulties in this troubled world and not a mystical after world." Berger's texts are packed full of historic references, drawing upon the philosophic impacts of philan- thropy, of social services, of the links of the Jewish Center move- ment with world Jewish activities and with the American scene. Rosensaft, paid a glowing trib- ute to the Israeli statesman who was one of the chief Zionist leaders and among the architects of the State of Israel. In "Moshe Sharett — Statesman of Israel," published by Shengold (45 W. 45th, NY36), the young man offers his personal acclaim for Mr. Sharett's services to his people, re- calls his own and his father's re- lationships with the former Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Israel, and draws upon the basic records to show the genius of the man he honors. Young Rosensaft, son of Mr. and Mrs. Josef Rosensaft, who sur- vived the Nazi holocaust to be- come prime movers in efforts to provide havens for the victims of Nazism, was born in Bergen-Belsen after the liberation. He was edu- cated in Switzerland and the United States. He lived in Israel and, like his father, befriended Mr. Sharett. This 64-page book contains an account of Mr. Sharett's life.
