Score of Cantata, "Joseph and His Brothers," commissioned by the National Jewish Welfare Board as the major musical work on a Jewish theme in celebration of its golden jubilee, is presented to Sanford Solender (right), executive vice president of JWB, by Robert Starer (center), the composer. A JWB committee under the chairmanship of Rabbi Avraham Soltes (left), chairman of JWB's National Jewish Music Council, commissioned Starer to compose the cantata and guided him in the selection and development of the Biblical theme. Scored for full orchestra and choir, as well as for performance by soloists, mixed chorus, organ or piano, the new work will have its world premiere at Carnegie Hall, New York, Jan. 22. The occasion will be a special concert under the auspices of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation in memorial tribute to Arturo Toscanini. William Steinberg, conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, will direct a full symphony orchestra for the cantata's premiere. The Camerata Singers will be conducted by Abraham Kaplan, and Marian Anderson will be guest narrator. Israelis Allowed to Pay in Own Currency for Visits of Relatives From Russia JERUSALEM (JTA) — Repre- sentatives of the official Soviet travel agency in Israel indicated that Israelis may pay in local cur- rency for visits of their relatives from the Soviet Union. The announcement paralleled reports that Israel does not plan to take any action for the time being to clarify Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin's recent statement that Soviet Jews would be allowed to visit relatives. in , Israel or even emigrate. The premier made the state- ment in reply to a question at a press conference Dec. 3 in Paris during an official visit to France. The Israel government is wait- ing to see whether the Soviets really mean to remove existing FOR BETTER wall washing, call James Russell. One day service. TO 6-4005. 526 Belmont. Jews in Romania, Poland 55—MISCELLANEOUS BUCHAREST (JTA) — The Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania reported Tuesday it had completed fencing around the ancient Jewish cemetery of Jassy, using prefrabricated sections for the mile-long fence. Cemeteries in several provincial towns, including Cluj, were fenced earlier last year but there are several such fencing projects which will be completed within this year. The federation also re- ported it had recently repaired ritual baths in several towns where Jews are still resident. Knesset Bill Enables Divorces for Mates of Different Religions JERUSALEM (JTA) — A bill that will enable mates of different religions to obtain a divorce in Israel was introduced into the Knesset, Israel's parliament, Tues- day by Justice Minister Yaacov Shapiro. Under the present law, dissolu- tion of mixed marriages is impos- sible in Israel since laws of mar- riage and divorce are governed by religious authorities and no civil or religious court has jurisdiction over both husband and wife. The bill is intended to give civil courts the power to issue declaratory judgments under which such marriages contracted abroad can be dissolved. Repair Communal Areas At -the same time, it was re- ported that a special committee of the Jewish Social and Cul- tural Association and the Lublin Jewish community has been formed to restore and guard the 150-year-old Lublin Jewish ceme- tery in Poland. The cemetery is the site of an obelisk commemorating the Jews murdered by the Nazis which was erected immediately after the war. More trees are being planted and new fences erected. Substantial al- . locations for the work have been. made by the Polish government, the Lublin City Council and the National Council for Monuments of the Struggle and Martyrdom. The entire project is scheduled for completion by next spring: barriers to - visits or immigration by Soviet Jews, it was indicated. Meanwhile, in London, nego- tiations were reported under way between the Board of Deputies of British Jews and other Jewish organizations about the composition of a dele- gation which will seek to call on Premier Kosygin during his visit to London starting Feb. 6. A leading member of the board said that a number of Jewish or- ganizations seemed to be anxious to join the delegation for public relations purposes even though the board is the accepted repre- sentative body of British Jewry. It was noted that the negotia- tions had an air of unreality be- cause there has been no indica- tion that the Soviet premier would be willing to meet with a Jewish delegation to discuss the problems of Soviet Jews. Prev- ious experience, it was pointed out, strongly suggested he would do no such thing. A government source said that Premier Harold Wilson was ex- pected to discuss the Middle East with the Soviet premier, among other issues, and that he would present to Kosygin the British stand for a ban on shipments of arms to the region, as was indi- cated by Foreign Secretary George Brown in Parliament re- cently. However, the source said, it was very doubtful whether Wil- son would bring up the subject of Soviet Jews. Shrinks Hemorrhoids Without Surgery S tops Itch--Relieves Pain For the first time science has found a new healing substance with the as- tonishing ability to shrink hemor- rhoids and to relieve pain — without surgery. In case after case, while gently relieving pain, actual reduc- - tion (shrinkage) - took -- place. Most amazing of all — results were so thor- ough that -sufferers made astonishing statements like "Piles have ceased to be a problem!" The secret is a new healing substance (Bio-Dyne®)— dis- _ covery of a world-famous research institute. This substance is now avail- , able in suppository or ointment form called Preparation 11©.
